I figured that was their most likely and only defense, but the implications of that defense are that all charity can and should be embezzled from by it's own officers regularly and thereby making the entire entire concept of donating to any charity completely useless.

It's a nonsensical defense as we know but also:

It's the power of decades of right wing propaganda and lots of big money spent to push some terrible ideas

Trump voters can range from confused old grandmothers where the old cable TV is set to Fox 24/7 and still trusts the media as long as a well dressed white man like Hannity delivers it, to actual white supremacists, to religious people that can justify anything with a god works in mysterious ways handwave, to people that just grow up in an area that us culturally homogeneous and everyone is a right winger for miles around

Well, Trump was fined a lot of money, but he just steals it from somewhere else, skims it from GOP campaign funds, or has his cult send him more.

That's what makes it so appealing for the wealthy to be criminals under our current system. Break a law and the fine if less than the amount you stole - but if a poor person breaks a law they set bail too high for them to afford, often exponentially higher than the cost of anything stolen.
