Ever talk on the phone before an online date?

I (32M) have been chatting with a girl (27F) for about a week and we were supposed to have a first date at a brewery tonight. She cancelled which was no big deal. She had a good reason as she was helping her grandma with things.

Anyway, she said she likes to talk on the phone and was going to call me but decided against it because I might not be into that. Which is kinda true, I just can't see many benefits to talking on the phone at this point. I am more charming in person where I can use eye contact and body language to try and get her to like me. Make she would've hated my voice? Probably not, but who knows.

What's your stance?
Is this a joke topic?

Why would you not want to talk on the phone with someone you presumably like talking to?

Its not only about being charming. You dont care to get to know her?

Tell her you'd rather meet in person
That's just what I did. I said it's not my favorite way to communicate before meeting up. But I also told her that after we do meet I'd be okay with talking on the phone.

Because I get basically nothing out of phone interactions, especially when I have no idea what this girl is like. Experts also say that 70 to 93% of communication is nonverbal so I'd be working with at best, 30% of my arsenal.

But that's why I go on dates, to get to know them better.
Welp... I told her that I would be down to talk on the phone if we can't meetup until this upcoming weekend.

dude wtf. Just talk to her over the phone. It's really not that big of a deal. Don't mess this up. You don't have to talk for an hour.

Your account age was why I did another double take because I am pretty sure that happened back around 2008

Is talking to her only for your benefit regarding looking better?

I just dont understand. This girl wants to talk on phone. You said youd be cool after an in person meeting.

Like, whats the deal with before? You think youd not impress or something?

Like, from a womans perspective. This seems sketchy. Tbh.

Yes, it's fairly common with online dating. Women often use it as a screening tool. Verify that you are a real person (people still get stood up for dates), get a feel for how talking to you will go, etc.

If you're going to be doing online dating, expect to be asked that pretty often. When I was doing online dating, for all of the women that wanted to talk on the phone first, it was never a long call. So you'll still have plenty to talk about on the actual date.

It's more that I'm very secure now in my looks and social skills when I was absolutely not when I first started dating at 25. I'm also not a big fan of my voice, too Ben Shapiro-ish for my liking lol

Told her that I didn't want to come off across more awkward than I am. She told me she understood why I felt that way \ _ ( ) _ /

Honestly that never happened for me. After a bunch of text messages and setting up a date, we met in person. I never had to do a phone call. Maybe it depends on the location
Yeah that could be it. It could also be age. The ones that wanted to talk on the phone first were in their mid 30's.

Hm not the same but I remember an old friend from school 5 years or so later wanted to chat casually, not date mind you, and I didn't want to but then she had the solid idea to chat while playing fortnite and maybe if you did something like watch a show or game together you'd be more up to it cos it's easier to converse that way
I am a mess and Felicia is the cleaner....
Never talked on the phone, but I did a video call once for a "digital date." This was during the early pandemic when everyone was still paranoid about in-person interaction, but it was perfectly fine even within that context.
