One thing I noticed in that movie when I was younger was that when Pee Wee was driving at night and seeing various directional signs, you could actually see the signs were on a track and just moving closer to the camera to give the illusion of driving past them. You can actually see it in this clip. Just keep an eye on the bottom-right corner.
