Holy shit, this is the news I wake up to? RIP to an absolute legend who had outsized influence on all animated media, creating works of art that have been appreciated by young people and adults the world over.

I never watched any other anime, but I've seen every episode of DB, even Super.

He created something that transcended the genre and became a part of mainstream culture. I'd say that he's responsible for a lot of people becoming anime fans, as DB was the first thing they watched.

Watching NHK News tonight they showed the sign language news announcement of his death and I found out the Japanese sign language sign for Dragon Ball is doing a Kamehameha motion.

It may not have been the first anime I ever watched (I used to stay up real late night and then early into the morning to watch sci-fi channel. Every now and then they'd be airing anime like vampire hunter D, dominion tank police, record of lodoss war, and bubblegum crisis. Good stuff) but it damn sure was the main one that got me and practically every single person I knew hooked.

Everyday without fail, I'd get home from highschool and eventually set up on the living room TV. My older brother would get home shortly after, and then my dad would be getting off work and also arriving home. All 3 of us would just be supped catching those dragon ball z episodes, and the pop off when goku first went super saiyan was real lol. It was an experience for a lot of us in north america/the united states since we never truly had something on TV like saint seiya was for south america that got us to pop off about anime way earlier. Yeah we had the syndicated sailor moon airing here and there, but toonami and dragon ball z was on another level.

Even putting aside his influence on Anime, Toriyama influenced a lot of what we have artistically for JRPGs too, working as an artist for Dragon Quest from start to current times, and Crono Trigger which is one of the big classics.

I remember when I was growing up, I tried to draw Goku a lot as a kid, and Piccolo, and was generally good enough at it. But it always felt like I was missing something. The man had a way with the pen, and he will never be forgotten.

Dunno for sure. I know he took heavy notes on how to do fight scenes from Ring ni Kakero. An old Manga about boxing from the 70s

yup. it's just finished adapting the Super Hero movie so its all fresh story from here hopefully. latest chapter was a sparring session with goten and trunks vs goku, then ended with ultra instinct goku vs beast gohan.

Even though I think Dragon Ball is laughably overrated, I respect and admire Toriyama for his one-of-a-kind art style and pioneering some of the coolest tropes in anime (characters charging their bodies like batteries, big flashy energy blasts, super fast and destructive fights, etc.). Dude was undoubtably a trend-setter whose influence can be felt in so many other franchises, from Sonic the Hedgehog to Tekken. I'd say he earned his spot as a legend.
I don't hold grudges. Let's vehemently argue today and casually have a beer together tomorrow.

Consider me devastated. Dragon Ball was my introduction to anime and inspired so many of my creative pursuits. To make it even more tragic, he still had more stories and art to share with the world. It's truly a tremendous loss to so many different fanbases.

He was what made Toonami my cartoon network. Dragonball Z would be my introduction to anime. Pokemon did too but Dragonball holds a special place above Pokemon. RIP
