My Stop & Shop has an app for my phone. It acts as the scanner. I scan everything as I'm shopping, put it in the bags, and then just scan a barcode at the end.
Once every 10 or so times I'll get flagged and customer service comes over and scans 3 random items to make sure I scanned them and aren't stealing them.
Quite frankly, it's a godsend. The time saved loading my cart, unloading it onto the belt, and then loading the cart again, is worth whatever "I'm doing their job" BS people are complaining about.
