It feels like Gen 1 was held together with twine and chewing gum the more we learn about how al dente the spaghetti code actually was. Glad Game Freak has learned how to properly program since then. /s
Back then, a lot of the weird coding (not this particular case which was basically the code equivalent of a typo, but speaking generally) was simply being creative in order to work within the limits of the hardware.
