It doesn't matter because Sony has 5 years from the theatrical release of Web to release another movie or they lose all their spider-man movie rights. And since the contract they cut with Marvel has no actual end date you can pretty much guarantee at least 2 shitty spider-man spin off movies a decade until someone buys Sony.

The article just says they were planning a bunch of Madame Web sequels and now that's not going to happen. They're almost certainly going to keep making movies about Spider-Man side characters.

Neither idea would be terrible. Spider Gwen could definitely be good, and Silver Sable could work if it focuses on her being connected to / allied with Peter Parker or some other Spider-Man incarnation.

The problem, which most of these executives don't get, is that generally comic book villains are only interesting as villains who create conflict for the heroes. Even Joker, the most successful villain-centric movie we've seen so far, was a mediocre story that only worked because they filled it with great actors and shamelessly copied Martin Scorcese to make the movie look beautiful.

In any case Sony's instincts with the Spider-Man franchise are so bad, any movies they put out that are actually good are sheer luck.

Aunt May marries into the Parker family. She works at a major corporation with Norman Osborne and they discover inhumane and illegal experiments within the corporation. She asks her husband Ben on what she should do and they go to Richard and Mary Parker for help as they are Government agents. The villain is loosely tied with some Spider-man villain. Lets go with...Vulture. The villain kills Richard and Mary but they successfully expose the scandal. The movie ends May and Ben adopt Peter to try and make amends for getting his parents involved. Post credits scene involves Norman Osborne being promoted to chairman and rebranding the corporation as Oscorp. He discovers super soldier and spider experiments that are still under wraps within the company. He decides...to proceed.

Sony Pictures Presents May: An Origin Story.

If I can get this pitch to Sony I think they'll hire me.

a standalone spider Gwen would have been perfect and you still could have built in venom or whatever around her.

I don't know. A character that has that little to work off of could make for a nice original story while still technically filling their Spider-Man quota. Granted the real wise decision would be to cut their losses and just give the rights back to Marvel. I mean... it probably is. Imagine how much Disney would charge Sony today if Sony wanted perpetual rights to one of the biggest Marvel draws with the only condition being they use those rights every 5 years. Then compare that number to the amount Sony has lost on using said license. Most of those movies, even though they're bombs, still technically made money. Morbius eventually made 167M on an 80M budget. Madame Web is around 50M on a budget of 80M, which is a loss of 30M, but Morbius' profits more than make up for it. There are enough people in the world that will go see any old crap that as long as Sony keeps the budgets lower going forward, they're at least going to make more than they lost.

I don't think it's a case of them doing these movies solely to keep the license. It's also because they don't really know what else to fund as a tent pole blockbuster every year.

They've got Zelda from Nintendo so they've been looking for something else. Hopefully that'll make them slow down with this crap and do something else.
