Like, just now in the menu it said "NEXT EXP 928," which I assumed meant "928 exp until the next level."

But this last fight got me 80 EXP, but it only lowered from 928 to 917. So...what am I missing here?

IIRC exp in Persona is split among the party members.

Was it 80 XP total, divided by the number of people in your party?
The ball is round, the game lasts 90 minutes. That's fact.
Everything else, is theory.

Ah, that makes sense. Yeah, there's 4 party members. I was thinking the EXP shown after battle was what everyone individually received.

(Though that wouldn't add up to 80, but maybe I misread.)

Just pick who you want to use and level the people you don't use with the monad clock when you find one ( instantly levels up two party members to MCs level )
You had to run through tartarus again with like one or two underlevelled members in the old game to catch them up but no need to do that anymore thanks to above mechanic
