Or do you just learn to adapt to whatever the default is?

One of the first things I do when I start up a game for the first time is open up the button config. I'm not sure why really, since most of the time I don't change it. Unless it's a 2D platformer, in which case I almost always change it since I make my control scheme the same on all of those to keep my muscle memory

The only game I've gone out of my way to do this on is Meg Man X

Basically never unless for some reason they make the jump button anything other than X
Science and Algorithms
Very rarely.

Something has to be actively pissing me off and used semi frequently.

Unfortunately, those are the generally the games where you cant change the button layout. So you have to hard change it on the console for all your games.

Then Im really annoyed

I try to maintain a consistency between games if at all possible. Things like in shooters, binding mouse button 4 to reload, or sprint to shift, or grenade to g, that sort of thing.
Shut your BF28/9 sound hole and listen up.
Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice? Strike three.
Sometimes.

If I'm playing with a controller, I always turn rumble off.

For 2D games, I always use the ZXCV and keys

The only time I do is when the douchebag set the controls wrong. When I press up I want to look up not down.

Oh yeah. On that note, it's not button configs, but

Invert camera controls for controllers if that counts.

For shooters specifically, I usually rebind some of the controls onto my mouse, as it has 6 side buttons.

There are a few cases. Like, if an FPS game has melee assigned to 'V' when the 'Q' button is available instead I'll switch it.

for me it's WASD to move, J to jump, K for main action (often an attack of some sort), L for secondary action, and then if I need more keys I just kinda spill into UIOP; at random

I never used to but now I have to configure any fps to be as close to my apex legends setup as possible.

All other games I learn the default.

Not that frequently these days, at least with controller inputs. I'm a lot more likely to do it if it's a game with keyboard controls. A lot of default KB controls for games are... well, boneheaded, to put it nicely.
Almost never unless it's a fighting game, and that's mainly because I use an arcade stick for those.

Post #22 was unavailable or deleted.
Also for Street Fighter games, I like to have Fierce Punch on Square and Roundhouse Kick on X instead of the shoulder buttons. Im a pad user.

I've changed the button configs probably around 10 times ever (ignoring controller config stuff when using a controller on PC).

Regularly for fighters.

Otherwise I hardly ever do it. Last non-fighters I recall doing it for were Tales of Arise and Astral Chain cause they map standards attacks to the shoulder button by default and that shit is trash.

I'm a lefty so with pc games I end up having to change everything. It's pretty frustrating for games with a ton of controls.

gotta invert that y axis every time

gotta get that melee attack off the right joystick every time

I have to make those basic changes every time. So, that covers a lot of games.
