In the survey of 537 game studios, live ops development teams want faster content releases

A new report from Griffin Gaming Partners says that 95% of game makers are developing or maintaining a live service game.
The 2023 Game Development Report, made in partnership with Rendered VC, surveyed 537 studios from across the globe.
Among the surveyors, 66% agreed that live services are necessary for long-term title success.

Video Games are pretty cool.
That's fine. I'll just keep not buying them and either digging into my back catalog or picking up new indie titles on steam for like 20 bucks.

GAAS is like DLC, paid online, and MTX. Pisses gamers off up until something else comes along that pisses them off and it becomes the norm. Once GAAS becomes the norm they'll probably try and push NFTs or Metaverse shit again.

So stop buying GAAS games if you don't want more of them. There's no reason why anyone should be buying that Suicide Squad game rn.

Not good if studios/devs want live service games.

I would believe that 95% of publishers want live service games
Report: 95% of studios are perfectly fine with being among the casualties of the inevitable games industry crash.

That stat smells like BS but I believe it.
The one in three hundred chance they release an uber successful GaaS will easily net the publisher a billion in revenue, so the risk will always be worth it for them.

My friends justify buying these games too with shit like "there's nothing else out" and it's like there's at least 5 games that come out every month that are worth playing. These GAAS games are never one of those five.

This past month has been crazy for games. Games with huge value and lengthy playtime. Suicide Squad sales should be in the absolute gutter but they're not because gamers are dumb af.

Live service games dont work.

They did for Fortnite. And it worked way beyond expectations.
And now companies want a piece of the pie.
The problem is that they are making shitty games with a $70 price tag.
As much as I dislike Fortnite, the game is free and very well polished.

Suicide Squad probably won't do well because that's a game that's still overall attempting to appeal to our demographic and failing.

But we can see the most played list and where most of the money is going. It's not the games that most people talk about on here and places like Reddit. It's games like Fortnite. The data shows that most gamers play a game like Fortnite or a sports game for most of the year and maybe will be briefly distracted by something else before going back to it. It already is the norm but it's probably not because of vocal online gamers. They're just quickly becoming a loud minority compared to the younger audience.

Of course we're still an audience that exists so whatever. There's room for both. This headline sounds like bullshit anyway.

It's not so bad if they mean putting out a f2p game. But adding live service shit to a full priced game is annoying.

Im not a big Fortnite player but Fortnite does it correctly.

Base game is FTP. You dont lose anything you pay for. The game is constantly being updated and balanced. Its super easy to get into.

now lets look at Destiny. Game is free to try but you have to pay for multiple expansions to catch up on content. Content that may or may not be removed at the devs whim. Its hard to get into and if you do manage to get past the terrible new player introduction youre lost in the story and no direction in what you can do. Mechanics of the game are constantly broken to where Bungie will constantly disable weapons and supers or just decide not to do anything.

So it basically covers any DLC and patches?

The thing with GaaS is it typically tries to hold your time hostage, so for every one GaaS title that succeeds, many if not most others must fail because time is finite.

It's gonna be a slaughter.
"I still have a tattoo to get, that says I'm living in the moment."
The survey is really fucking misleading, basically wraps up any game expected to receive DLC, patches, or content for a period of time as "live service" if I'm interpreting it right.

So, basically like every game that's been released since a broadband connection was able to be hooked up to a console as a primary feature past the XBox/PS2 era.
Ignore the slop, live service can be done well.

Why get annoyed? It's not worth it. If you don't like something then don't buy it.
I thought live service games were dying.
Many of them fail. A ton of these games have closed down. I dont want to buy into something that will just close within a few years. Made that mistake with Marvel Heroes (console).
by the standards of this survey splatoon would count as a live service game ya know the game that offers FREE content to keep players invested

Warframe and Path of Exile are the only examples I can think of that do it right. Even then, Warframe has definitely attempted to gouge it's users but the player base throws a fucking fit and the devs immediately back down.

Exactly.

Just to recap - 80% of all live-service games fail to make a profit, just like 80% of all product-based games fail to make a profit.

The difference is, sometimes a service game gets closed within a year of launch, then you can't play it.
A lot of studios are going to crash and burn trying to chase that fortnite money
Fucking disgusting. Hope all of these projects fail. They're making it very difficult to care for them once they get fired
:)
that seems pretty obvious
I could see you, but I couldn't hear you You were holding your hat in the breeze Turning away from me In this moment you were stolen...
Ya.. its obvious that most are trying, Its just they almost all tend to release half ass'd and with little content beyond the main game and generic repeatable missions that get boring the first time

but hey.. let them flood the market of a type of game that is incredibly time demanding when there can only be so many success
