This isn't True Detective, this is some story about supernatural bullshit, literally.

The first season was great because it bordered along the lines of supernatural but never was, this one just dove right in and said fuck that line.

All and all it's still watchable though, but they should have named it something else. Jodi Foster can still get it.

Keep in mind season 4 is being done with an entirely new director and writer. The original creator is on as executive producer but otherwise it's basically an entirely different crew using brand recognition to tell their own story.

I thinki theyre flirting with the supernatural, but its gonna be something down to earth. My biggest problem has been how its kinda boring? Too much character development and too little story progression. Like shit...we still know pretty much NOTHING about what happened.

I think it will end up not being supernatural, but this season desperately wants to be Twin Peaks, (and absolutely pales in comparison).
Tonally and thematically, it is just all over the place. Now I'm really glad that it's only 6 episodes, because ep. 3 just made me want to stop watching it altogether.
It is impossible to live in the past, difficult to live in the present, and a waste to live in the future.

There is nothing in the realm of possibility that can explain several things that have happened so far

at best it will be nonsense pseudo scientific explanations that dont hold up to scrutiny

I don't know what possibly can be down to earth after the ending of the most recent episode. The barefoot dancing ghost guy could be chalked up to the lady being batshit or something, and the guy strangely yet violently shaking while standing upright and seemed possessed could be convulsions because of some illness or whatever, but this goes beyond rational explanations.

Wait...only 6 episodes? Damn...okay, unless it covers a LOT of ground in the next episode, Id say the season isnt very good at all.

For the facts out of the way, it's only True Detective in last minute branding. It was supposed to be a one-off series ala Mare of Eastown called Night Country. It got Cloverfield'd and they spent some time rewriting and reshooting it to jam it full of S1 references.

Nick P, the writer/creator of TD, has been pretty much on full blast about hating it and not endorsing it. He's apparently an enormous ass and HBO refuses to work with him again, as well as 90% of the cast of the first three seasons agreeing with HBO on this, including the OG director Cary Joji Fukunaga, who knows why but he's effectively canceled from his own anthology.

All that said... it isn't very good TV. It reminds me of the podcast The White Vault /alot/ and seems to be taking beats and paths whereever it can to ape other cosmic horror. The Tsalal, for example, is a famous short story from Thomas Ligotti. They're very on the nose with all this shit in S4.
Since only from below can one better see the heights.
