Forbidden Planet.
'Vinyl is the poor man's art collection'.
Post #3 was unavailable or deleted.
Blade Runner, (both of them).
Dune, (both of them).
2001: A Space Odyssey
Flash Gordon, (yep, I said it).
It is impossible to live in the past, difficult to live in the present, and a waste to live in the future.
(He/Him).
The visuals admittedly dont hold up, but Wrath of Khan is legitimately damn good.
Irregardless, for all intensive purposes, I could care less.
City of Lost Children
Dark City

Why be stupid? Does it make you happy to be stupid?
Fifth Element
Heavy Metal
12 Monkeys
"Oh man would you just shut up already, how come all you sword guys have to talk about how cool your swords are?"

12 Monkeys and Brazil are a good pair to watch back to back.

Alien and Aliens dont seem to have been mentioned yet.

Also, I know its not held in the same regard but I have a soft spot for Circle.
Syfy: Interstellar
Fantasy: Before Sunrise
Sci-fi: The Matrix, Demolition Man
Fantasy: Lord of the Rings trilogy

It definitely counts as a fantasy film. And its fantastic.
Fantasy movies are hard.

They seem to age extremely quickly.

I can think of more decent modern fantasy than I can of high or traditional. Shit you have LotR, then what?

Willow, dragon heart, clash of the titans, narnia, conan... and I'm pretty much out. (not saying those are particularly good)

I cheated a little, and saw one I would recommend, Stardust.

I also liked The Brothers Grimm.

I guess sleepy hollow could fit as well, but that's dipping a little towards horror.

*The huntsman, seventh son, and hansen and gretel and decently fun cheesy movies as well.
........the ghost in the machine...

Thinking on it Wizard of Oz. Throw in The Dark Crystal and Labyrinth. Never ending Story? Beastmaster? Conan?

The restored cut of Metropolis , for sure.

For fantasy... that's harder, but I'd say that list would have to include Excalibur and Legend . And at least one of the two Muppet fantasy titles, but I can't bring myself to pick one.

Yeah, those were all on the list I pulled Stardust from.

Wouldn't have thought of Oz myself, but it was their #1 out of 100. (possibly not beastmaster)

Europa Report is a legit sci fi gem. It doesn't get nearly enough recognition.

Also Moon. Sam Rockwell is fucking phenomenal.
Only two things can end a Republican's career - a dead girl or a live boy.
There are the How to Train Your Dragon movies.

Forgot two favorites
Buckaroo Banzai
Close Encounters of the Third Kind

It depends on what counts, as the genre can be broad. Here are ones from this century. Tons of old great ones too, but I have this list handy:

Lord of the Rings
Pan's Labyrinth
The Shape of Water
Arrival
Dune
Mad Max: Fury Road
Guardians of the Galaxy
Inception
Ex Machina
Children of Men
Minority Report
Edge of Tomorrow

I know you hate many of those
Currently playing: haven't played anything since August. Something is wrong with me!
I can only assume no one mentioned Robocop yet because it's just a given that it's not only the greatest sci-fi movie of all time but it's just the greatest movie in general of all time.
Rage is a hell of an anesthetic.
Minority Report
Equilibrium
Demolition Man
Alien franchise
Predator franchise
Riddick franchise (but Pitch Black and Riddick 2013 are the best ones)
The Running Man
Serenity (if youve seen Firefly)
Ghost in the Shell
Escape from New York / L.A.
12 Monkeys
Robocop franchise
Terminator franchise
Back to the Future franchise
Akira
Inception
The Thing
Starship Troopers
The Matrix
Star Wars Original Trilogy
Bladerunner franchise
2001: A Space Odyssey

Fantasy is trickier because aside from LOTR theyre pretty bad and never age well.
The Princess Bride
Willow
Labyrinth
etc.

mostbof the Vehoeven movies touch on sci fi. I think of Robocop as more Dystopian like Mad Max. But I can see it. Think Total Recall is the best choice followed by Starship Troopers.

They turned a mother fucker into a gods damned robot and all of the cops weren't pure scumbags... That's science AND fiction!

That's part of what I was saying. It can be so broad. Does dystopia count? Personally, I think it's sci fi.

And the best villain this side of Frank Booth.

Gonna put forth Stalker after having watched it last month. One of the rare movies I've seen that really moved me and changed my perspective. Going to be watching the rest of Tarkovsky's films for sure.

Im aware there are a metric ton of fifties and sixties sci fi but most is garbage.

Godzilla might be worthy as far as an older movie.

2001, gojira, planet of the apes, forbidden planet, invasion of the body snatchers, the incredible shrinking man, the day the earth stood still, creature from the black lagoon, them!, and some hammer stuff should/could all fit in
