Definitely real. Again, some of what you see on the news is exaggerated. I've seen Bill O'Reilly (yes, he's still around) say you can't even walk down the streets, which is definitely not true. Violent crime isn't through the roof compared to other big cities, although car break-ins and property damage incidents are (low bar, I know).
But yep, near the Tenderloin there was shit every few steps.
