Even if she had all her mental senses and was intentionally going to attempt to harm or kill an officer, how in the hell could a cop not disarm and subdue a 95 year old woman without a tazer? You just go up to her and take the knife right from her.

That incident was seriously fucked. The woman has dementia, walking slowing on her stroller while holding a kitchen knife that could've been easily taken from her hand. Such a threat warranting a taser. /S

My friends mother also works in a nursing home and shes talked about how patients can be violent, while a bunch of 54 nurses are expected to deal with them.

Not sure trained cops needed to use tasers, though. Especially given they are fucking dangerous things to use on the elderly.

Because that's not how most cops are trained. Cop training is usually about incapacitating someone as quickly and efficiently as possible. Deescalate just isn't taught in a lot of places. This is part of the "militarization" of police thing that people talk about.

Why are tasers even a thing?

If someone's got a gun, you're not gonna use a taser, but shoot them back.
If someone's got a knife and is actually trying to stab someone, you're gonna shoot them.
If someone's unnarmed, you've got no place being a police officer if you can't handle them without a taser. Go do something else.

Absolutely fucking not. This isnt a king fu movie. Ill give the lady a lil zap before I risk severed fingers or a cut artery. Now you dont Tazer someone to death like its Syphon Filter, but you definitely dont try to hand to hand disarm someone with a knife.

The fact that the main U.S. policing philosophy seems to be to shoot anytime they're inconvenienced, and they're trained to target the center of mass which happens to house all our vital internal organs, is all the justification for wanting alternatives.

Yes, people can die from tasing, however they're far more likely to die from getting shot.
