I was 12 when this movie came out and I remember watching it on VHS and not enjoying it at all. I probably had a misconception on what the movie was about as a kid, but I've never had the want to watch it again as an adult to see if I'd have a better understanding of it.
I was much younger when it came out and it holds a special place in my heart, even after re-watching it as an adult.
The story is the weakest part about it and Robin Williams is, for better or worse, Robin Williams, but there's so much heart in the movie. The soundtrack is great, there are lots of neat visuals, and it has what is, by far, LL Cool J's best acting role (easily the highlight of the movie).
I kinda liked it -- fantastic setpieces full of childlike whimsy and all that. And yes, LL Cool J was pretty good in it, with his on-screen apex being disguising himself as a couch.

Hmm. It's not a good movie, but it's also not really bad. It's not fun, but it's also not boring. It's both plodding and slow and breezy and quick. The movie is... I want to say it's disappointing but only in the sense that it should be better than it is. I've never been able to evaluate Toyz. The literal spatial takeover montage and the scale model city scenes are memorable, but it also feels so much older than the time it was released, like Popeye-era Williams.

I like the dreamlike quality of the sets and costumes. The music video scene is really good. The plot is to schmaltzy though. I also have a low tolerance for manic Robin Williams.
I still sort of like it though.

I enjoy it but I can easily understand why someone wouldn't like it. It's a hard one to recommend since it wouldn't be easy to give a quick synopsis or say what it's about.
I'd even go as far to say, it's one of the only movies I've ever seen where I'd be hard-pressed to simply say what genre it is.
