This is something I'm genuinely worried about, as most still use that site for every breaking news story. Everyone keeps saying that whatever stupid policy Elon uses will kill the site but it hasn't at all.

If it makes it to this time next year. It sounds like the new plan is gonna bury the platform.
And as the people bend, The moral fabric dies, Then country can't pretend to ignore its peoples cries.
If he truly makes it a paid platform say goodbye to its popularity. At that point anyone (well, anyone) can come along and provide an alternative.

Xitter becoming a "fee speech platform" might just be the best thing that could happen to Mastodon.
Sigs are rather pointless, except if it's to showcase animation and images.

Fee speech is a great term.

Basically a certainty if it makes it to next year.

It will. Musk is bonded to this company.

Twitter/X is kind of at a "too big to fail" moment right now - minor changes like a premium subscription isn't really enough to get people to change their habits enough to bother dropping Twitter. Musk has to really go overboard in order to actually turn people away (like that rumoured plan about a subscription for regular use )

That's not to say it's making money or anything, but unless Musk actively burns everything down, Twitter/X will be sticking around long enough to definitely have an active role in the 2024 election.
He'll have to stop yanking servers out of data centers first.

That was the whole point of him buying it honestly.

That was the entire reason he bought the service. That's why it's near impossible to avoid right-wing chuddery on their algorithm curated feed now.

It's a near certainty he will try. Just before the 2022 midterms he made a tweet directly encouraging people to vote Republican.

That seemingly didn't help the Republicans much though, so he might try to be more subtle about it this time around.

He is, but the good news that twitter was never really that powerful to influence votes in the past. Facebook was closer to the average voter. Thats why Congress spent more time with Facebook.

Young voters are on TikTok ,Snapchat, and instagram.

What are the odds the sun comes up tomorrow? Less than Musk using twitter to influence the election.

Wasn't this obvious from the time we expressed interest in acquiring twitter?

Twitter has always gotten massively inflated media attention compared to the actual size of its userbase, because for whatever reason it ended up being journalists' preferred social media platform.

All media companies influence elections and all of them are owned by billionaires.

Whatever influence twitter has on elections, it still pales in comparison to the influence fox/msnbc/cnn have on them. We have an ancient voter population that can barely navigate facebook, much less twitter.
