This topic is very strange, it comes across like you don't use Whatsapp like everyone everywhere else does

We don't. It's a combination of the fact that there's never been a need, and the fact that most global iPhone users are in the US and iMessage is like a cult.

Good thing I'm latino and use WhatsApp, not like those... americans *shivers*
Come out and live with a community in a beautiful place out in the country
Until I took vacations abroad, I only used text and Line (to keep in touch with Japanese friends, specifically).

WhatsApp wasn't a thing I was introduced to until I got off the plane and discovered how very ubiquitous it was everywhere but home.

EDIT: I use it all the time now, and managed to get some family and friends on board.

I only use it with friends in/from Europe and Latin America. Never thought about that until now.

Nearly every American I know uses WhatsApp--it's a Facebook app. I assume it's got the largest user base by population

I do, we have a work chat thing going in one.

I can just text people without using a separate app, don't understand the point

WhatsApp came to popularity as the cheaper alternative back when cell phone companies were charging people by the text still. Then it just became one of those things where everybody had it so everyone else had to use it.

I've never really known what it is. I rarely text anyway.

Americans are the main character and way too important to do what everyone else does. It was the same story with AIM when the rest of the world used MSN.

American exceptionalism goes way beyond the use of communication apps, sadly.

I worked for a company that used WhatsApp, and this totally tracks.
Have you tried thinking rationally?
WhatsApp is the main online messaging app in my country (Malaysia). Even our politicians use it.

I use it for some work communications because were a global organization and have people moving and working all around the world, sometimes in places where satellite internet is the only available outside communication method.

Most people in America only text people in America. Texting to local numbers is usually free, so there wasn't a big need for WhatsApp. I would have thought it was to keep your phone number hidden, but it uses your actual phone number so it didn't matter. I think WhatsApp is popular in other countries because people in other countries frequently chat with people in different countries. I know back when I was in college, international texting wasn't free. I just switched to Verizon a couple months ago and I noticed that one of the things they offered was free international texting.

It's useful for chatting with people that use iPhones that want to send me photos or images.

I'll be using it extensively when I'm in japan to talk to friends and family.

I did download it when my friend went to visit her family in Northern Ireland a few months back but then we didn't end up using it because her hotel had wi-fi so I've still never used it.
