Shit is hard compared to the originals. Im used to mindlessly (for the most part) doing chain combos while occasionally dodging. Now I have to actually think about when my windows to attack are. I died like 10 times to an early segment where some heavy draugurs break through a wall, before I realized I have to play more conservatively. Hit twice then dodge backwards, and always be spamming the boys arrows. I was waffling between normal and hard difficulty, and Im glad I went with normal. Although based on a couple things I read I think the game just has poorly tuned difficulty where the beginning is the hardest part (before you unlock any of your abilities).

I just made it to the lake and am circling around to find all the docks. Kratos is definitely softer and gentler in this outing. Old Kratos would have reacted very differently when the witch got upset about shooting her boar. Probably would have killed the boar out of spite and then beheaded the witch for good measure.

Yes, the beginning is the hardest part.

But not because of the lack of abilities, but because you struggle to find some kind of flow.

As soon as you are able to fight draugrus fluently, you will see what I mean. Soon enough, you will block, parry and dodge them however you want, and punish them for every move, just as they punish every single mistake of you right now.
It's kind of hard at first.

Although, it was also my first PS4 game, and I realized it was because my TV was not on Game Mode. Then it got easier.

Sometimes I wonder how many people don't realize their TVs have that.

mine does. I always assumed it was just for visuals. What does it even do?

When it's off, it helps slightly with visuals. But there's also noticeable input lag with every game. Turning it on also turns off the delayed response.

The over the shoulder camera definitely makes the combat more visceral, but damn if it doesnt make me get hit in the back all the time. The indicator arrows are barely useful when theres 5 of them visible for the two long range attackers, 2 melee enemies are who kind of near you, and one whos about to bury an axe in your back.

One of the upgrades kind of help with that.

And the indicator turns red when one of them is about to hit you.
