I've never seen one but they seem unusual based on movies

Let's all please just get along.
Theyve always treated me fine. One time I found an Amish fellow named Amos at a club in my hometown. He lamented the fakeness of that reality show Amish Mafia. He followed me and my girlfriend home and came to our apartment, apparently wanted to see her boobs. She was drunk and zonked out so he left.

I don't really have an opinion on them

They're not nearly as wholesome as they're portrayed. Child sexual abuse runs rampant, and shun any women who come out with their abuse.
This isn't funny Dean, the voice says I'm almost out of minutes!

I don't know what to think. I have heard a number of people escape the Amish and talk about harsh treatment, shunning , sexual abuse even within families and more. But I don't have any evidence of that being a widespread thing. So I don't want to caste a wide net. But I no how some churches are able to hide this horrible stuff and get away with it. And they would have an easier time then most to cover it up.

From a sociological perspective I find the fascinating. I'm sure there are bad apples involved but I'm not going to condemn all Amish people for it.

generally have great bakeries and are very friendly in my experience
I highly dislike them. They ride their buggies on 55mph roads after dark and are frequently a hazard when you crest a hill to see a slow moving black object in your lane. Their horses leave shit in the road which is also a road hazard for motorcyclists. Theyre frequently hypocrites who will gladly ask to borrow your 4x4 or other technology whenever its convenient for them. They play dumb and use their perceived ignorance as an excuse to their advantage quite often.

And Im only going off of my own personal experiences, so thats not to mention the numerous problems within their community.
i generally don't, despite living relatively close to them. tbh, they're probably fine with that.
Boom! That's right, this is all happening! You cannot change the channel now!
Well, the truth is usually just an excuse for lack of imagination.
Their "mushroom" popcorn is awful. Do not consume.
There are individuals who are Amish and are good people. The culture, however, is filled with abuse. I'd recommend reading the books by Saloma Miller Furlong, Ira Wagler, and Misty Griffin. Peacock has a good documentary to watch called Sins of the Amish.

misty is one i have heard of i think. was she the one that had abusive mom and stepfather so she left them and got taken in by an amish bishop who raped her and another girl and then ended up molesting his own 12 year old daughter? if that is the story i am thinking of it is horrifying

Yesterday I saw an advertisement for Amish made wooden crafts. It showed an Amish guy using an electric power saw and drill. Im confused by that. Dont their believes prevent them from using tools like that?
From what I have seen it depends on the community. But there is a lot who view it as they can't use technology for personal use, but it is fine if it is strictly for business. The video I watched about it even showed how the amaish guy had a smart phone for his deli.

yeah it seems pretty fucked up just like any cult that imposes strict limits on what its adherents can can't do.

but you can't deny the craftsmanship of Amish made furniture. if i'm ever in financial shape to afford it, i wanna get a bunch of Amish made furniture.

Religious Cult, some good products but the culture is definitely one of cover up, abuse (sexual or otherwise), some beastiality, etc. General features of a closed religious culture. Also, elder sentinal culture, which to me is just, um yea no. The Jehovah's Witnesses have the same elder sentinal spy culture too.
