DAYTONA BEACH (AP) A woman shot her terminally ill husband to death inside a Daytona Beach hospital on Saturday and then barricaded herself in his room, officials said.
Daytona Beach police said they evacuated part of AdventHealth Hospital and were negotiating with the woman. No one else was injured.
Police said in a statement that the woman was not seen as a threat to staff or patients. She was taken into custody shortly after 3 p.m.
The woman, identified as 76-year-old Ellen Gilland, is facing a first degree murder charge in the death of her husband, 77-year-old Jerry Gilland, officials said at a press conference.
Daytona Beach Police Chief Jakari Young told reporters that the couple had planned the shooting.
They had a conversation about it and the actually planned this approximately three weeks ago that if he took a turn for the worse that he wanted her to end this, Young said, according to Orlando Sentinel news partner Spectrum News 13. Obviously, were unsure how she brought the gun into the hospital, but this was planned.
This should bring to light that we need to be able to allow our loved ones to die on their own terms, but it won't.Agreed.
We'll put our pets down the instant their quality of life dips, or they are "suffering", but our family members and relatives? Suffer away, because suffering is very, very profitable in our country.
I work in elder care. Trust me, no one wants to live to truly advanced age. It's not a life.

This is why we need legal euthanasiaI agree with this too though

If you have a terminal illness that's going to leave you with prolonged, intense pain and suffering, why not have the choice to end things on your own terms?
firing a gun inside a hospital, what a fucking idiot. if you absolutely have to commit assisted suicide, do it in a way that doesn't endanger other people
Totally endangering somebody else's life when the gun is directly against the other person.

Could They both not think of anything other then shooting him to death? Maybe smothering or overdosing him the guy to death?Probably just thought that would be the quickest way
