No it really doesn't. The series was Megami Tensei, a novel originally. Goddess Reincarnation. Then when they wanted to separate themselves from the novel for the SFC games (the novels went in a different direction even from the original FC games) they called it . True Goddess Reincarnation. The opening for the SFC game has Steven writing code and he changes the romaji shin input first to (new) then (god) then finally to (true). Since they are all pronounced shin in Japanese you often have to change multiple kanji before you get what you want, but this was also a bit of a pun as well. Anyway from SMT onward there is no connection to the books or even goddess reincarnation, but the gameplay is similar so that's how it is.
