Maybe but the guy would have had to walk up the driveway past two lit up windows into the living room where she was, and open our gate to get into our backyard. Makes it seem more intentional than anything.

The terrifying part is he tried to get in the house immediately after your wife went inside. So he obviously didnt care if anyone was asleep or not, which means he was planning on doing god knows what.
Yeah I'm thinking that as well. She let the dog inside, shut the screen door, turned the light off, then as she shut the back door she heard the screen door open and the guy started pushing. Guess he thought she was alone but then ran off when she called for me. She was strong enough to hold the door closed on him thankfully.

it will notice next time. my dog barks at everything that moves outside.
often have to tell her to be quiet (we know she's doing her job but it's not good to do that when everyone is sleeping).
Same with this dog. An acorn can fall out of a tree and he'll freak out.
