My wife was letting the dog inside for the night around 2am. As she closed the backdoor, someone started pushing at the door and turning the knob. She saw the outline of a guy's shoulder and back in the dark as he was pushing on the door with his arm. Once he heard her call out to me, he let off the door and disappeared.

Called the cops. They looked around the backyard and didn't see anything. Said they'd drive around the neighborhood to see if anyone out walking around.

Is this a normal routine for your dog? Maybe you guys are being watched?
I'm glad you're both ok and that the person took off. Hopefully they're were frightened enough to never return.

Get armed
Are you armed? Or have a good reliable weapon? The scary thing is they tried getting in when they knew someone was home. That's bold.

Kinda. We let our 4 dogs outside every couple hours and leave them for 5-20 mins. There's no exact time we let them out.
We live deep in one of those safe suburban areas so idk how much we would be watched. He clearly was in our backyard for a bit though. I just can't believe the paranoid dog that barks at absolutely everything didn't notice him.

That's a good idea. Will look into that.

Yeah really. That's what has us shocked so much.
We don't have a gun.

The terrifying part is he tried to get in the house immediately after your wife went inside. So he obviously didnt care if anyone was asleep or not, which means he was planning on doing god knows what.
Wow that sounds terrifying. Glad youre both safe! Definitely look into motion lights and cameras. So sorry that happened to you guys.
Deep in the suburbs is concerning. Yeah get a gun. At least for your wife. Chances are this is not random or a stranger.

it will notice next time. my dog barks at everything that moves outside.
often have to tell her to be quiet (we know she's doing her job but it's not good to do that when everyone is sleeping).

edit: we still love our dog despite it's flaws. does alot more good than harm.

Maybe but the guy would have had to walk up the driveway past two lit up windows into the living room where she was, and open our gate to get into our backyard. Makes it seem more intentional than anything.

Yeah I'm thinking that as well. She let the dog inside, shut the screen door, turned the light off, then as she shut the back door she heard the screen door open and the guy started pushing. Guess he thought she was alone but then ran off when she called for me. She was strong enough to hold the door closed on him thankfully.

Same with this dog. An acorn can fall out of a tree and he'll freak out.

This. My folks home got broken into during the day and they live on a busy main street. My mom was home but in the basement and the guy never went there knowing someone was down there. Whole house was trashed. Scary.

He probably figured that he could overpower one woman (the wife). Assuming TC is a man, he probably didn't want to take his chances picking on someone his own size. Even if TC is also a woman, it'd be hard for one average sized dude to take on two people at once.

Really sucks that this happened to you TC.
Is it possible she was dreaming? At 2am she might not have been completely awake. Especially if letting the dogs out at that hour is pretty routine. I've had some weird experiences in a half-awake stupor that I could have sworn were real at the time.

Yeah I'm a man. Plus he was a smaller weaker kinda guy from what my wife could determine. Both by the fact that she could see his height outline in the dark and the fact that she was strong enough to keep the door shut on him.

No she's a night owl. Her and her little brother were awake watching tv. I was asleep upstairs.
That's scary as hell. I'm always worried someone will try to get into my home especially since I live alone now. I agree with others who said get motion sensor lights and register for a gun if you could. Also, get cameras.

Cameras are dirt cheap. I plan on getting one even though I'm in a safe small town crackheads and kids can show up cause to them even $5 is gold. Cops won't help they'll just make a report and that's it.

we had it happen once in-between a move. but i got all of my shit out before it happened. someone broke the windows. went in and stole a briefcase with a really old bible and a leather jacket along with the cabinets in the house. my grandfather had the chance to seek prosecution against the people who did that but never followed through.

i'm probably going to have to move shit out soon as well. it's going to be rough in less than 2 weeks (already got confirmed for the place).

This is a stupid reason to not have respect for dog owners, and FYI it is possible to both love your dog and rely on it for home security

How curious. If it barks at other people, I wonder why it didn't bark at this unwelcome visitor invading its territory.

This reminds me of when the house I was living in was shot.

I was renting a room from a guy who owned a townhouse. It was me, the owner, and one other dude who was a veteran. Anyway, we had neighbors next door, a single mother, her son, and his best friend. Now the mom worked about an hour away and was never home, and the two boys were about 18 years old or so. That age right after they graduate highschool but still hang around at the highschool and it isn't weird because that's where all their friends are. Apparently they were selling weed there and such, which due to the lack of supervision was kind of expected, but we didn't care because they never bothered us.

That was until one night our house is shot in a drive by. Apparently they must have ticked someone off, because some kids do an amateurish drive by shooting of the neighbors house, but also our house too. We weren't sure if the shooters knew where the neighbors lived since they shot both houses. And we knew those two teenagers knew the shooters because they were bragging about the fact their windows were shot out. My roommate who owned the house was scared and called the cops but they wouldn't do anything for some reason, and the security system he had obviously did precisely jack dick as we didn't realize the house was shot until the next morning. We figure if the neighbors were going to keep doing stupid stuff, the next step might be a home invasion. The owner installed new security cameras but I wasn't putting any stock in that since we already had cameras and they did nothing. So, I decided it was time to buy a gun. I knew my veteran roommate had a little .38 he kept on his desk so I asked him for advice and I ended up going with a 9mm.

When I brought it home I was reading through the literature as my roommate is inspecting the gun. I asked if I should keep it locked up for safety. He walks out of the room and comes back with his .38 Beretta, racks the slide, and a cartridge falls out. He says, "You keep it loaded, you keep a round in the chamber, and you keep it within reach."

Moral of the story is, we had motion lights, we had cameras, we had a security system, and they didn't really prevent anything from happening. It's a good idea to have a firearm.

I had someone break into my house while I was at work. They didn't steal much that I could see. They went through the window (which I didn't even know was unlocked because I never use it). I saw the window was open when I got home and got scared and grabbed my bat.

The only things I could see that were missing were a pair of Vans, my wii u gamepad (but not the wii u console which was perplexing) and the change in my change jar.

Needless to say I made sure every window was shut and locked after that, and also got a home security system installed. Just lucky they didn't take anything really that valuable or irreplaceable.

Get a security camera. Not only will you have this guy on video if he comes back, criminals are usually afraid of cameras. Take it from someone who had a break in. A gun is great to have, but it's not complete home security.

Not to shit on the story as a whole, as that is scary, but if someone's determined to try a drive-by on a house, there isn't really much outside of actual armed security vans that can stop an unexpected drive-by. So I can't exactly say the moral makes sense, as cameras and lights and alarms are more meant to deter the common B&E jobs like the TC described (and ones where they aren't home).

The only place you can live and be 100% safe from a drive-by is the white house. I wouldn't recommend saying lights/cameras/security "did nothing" because they couldn't stop a drive-by. That's not why you have those things.

Thanks for the well wishes and concern from everyone.
Put one of those gun stickers on your backdoor. You know, its usually a gun or ar15, and it might have "inside" or "armed" or whatever. Even if you don't plan on owning a gun just stick one of those on the windows or door windows that are problems areas.
