I'm a just a few hours in now. I've been digging it, knocking off each characters chapter one has felt like going through the motions but the artwork and gameplay is superb.

It all feels a little soulless behind the polish so hopefully as the chapters progress past the (rather generic) early chapters it finds some steam. It'll be nice combining jobs too, I'm still not sure who I'll stick with.

it's garbage
Boring, generic, completely forgettable

I loved it. The art style is really cool and i like the battle system.
I couldn't finish it after 30 hours. The battle system was cool, but as a whole, the game doesn't really change at all from the beginning chapters, both in the plot and dungeon design. The story wasn't interesting, and every dungeon felt kind of same-y. Bosses take waaaaay too long as well.
...I think I'm done here...
I like it, I get why some people don't though.
From the depths, the thing they called Worm King did rise.
Nirn itself did scream in the Mages' and Necromancers' war.
I don't have a ton of RPG games on my belt, so I'd say YMMV depending on your experience with it. This game is polarizing for some reason. Prior to playing this game, I wasn't a big fan of turn based outside Pokemon. Then xenoblade 2 action auto RPG came and I was spoiled (this was 2 years ago) and was adamant on not playing turn based RPG games. A coworker got me this game though two Christmases ago, and have it a shot last summer, and beat it in the fall and really enjoyed it.

The stories themselves are not super deep. But the art style, music and gameplay are superb. The biggest criticisms from people are that the characters don't interact with each other that much in each other's storylines, and that's actually true for the most part. Other than that, critics think it's repetitive.

I really love this game's gameplay though. the break mechanic is awesome, as well as each characters skills and being able to unlock different jobs (as well as secret ones). Story wise it's alright. Characters in the story are interesting. This game really picks up story wise in chapter 3 for all characters, and there's a post game boss and 4 secret jobs with their own bosses. Those secret jobs unlock after beating bosses, as well as a post game boss... And those are super challenging. I got 100hrs easily in this game and I didn't best everything.

I recommend after beating chapter 1 with everyone, then just focusing on 4 characters and beating all their chapters (2-4), then after you do, play the remaining 4 characters and beat their chapters. Otherwise it's going to be a major grind fest. Better to have better items to attach the second half of characters. Doesn't cheapen the experience at all!
Less is more. Everything you want, isn't everything you need.
Kinda mediocre and the story is annoyingly disjointed
I am Mogar, God of Irony and The Devourer of Topics.
The story sucks until the very end of the postgame, but even then, the way they reveal things sucks. The art style is nostalgic and weirdly beautiful. The music reaches god tier, particularly in the boss fights. Personally I like the gameplay a lot too. Good game imo, but the criticism it gets is generally fair.
I'm sorry, but 10,000 of ANYTHING on a PS2 would absolutely destroy your framerate. It'd be like playing chess through the mail. ~johnboy1

Neat battle system but the story is painfully generic and never gets interesting at all.
See you next Wednesday.
awesome. the graphics, music, and battle system are all top notch. my one complaint is not being able to change your main character until after beating their story. don't get why some people are so down on this game.

The gameplay is some of the funnest I had with a JRPG turn base in a long time. I love mixing classes like in FFV. With that said, the story being segmented like it was is complete ass. I also hate how the characters only interact in awkward "banter moments" in the story that is completely missable if you don't have the right characters in the right time of the story. The voice acting is top notch, the unreal engine looks really nice for a 2D game, creative boss designs (chapter 4 bosses) and the side quests having multiple ways to beat it really does make me appreciate this game more. 9/10 IMO.

It's okay. Combat feels a little long and not a fan of the story but class mixing is always neat and it's a pretty game with good music.

The combat is very fun and the music is among the best. Too bad the story is mostly a drag and almost all the game has the same loop...

Go to a town ---> Keep talking to people and use your characters simple out of combat abilities ---> Go to a dungeon.

I know this is the basic JRPG gameplay loop but Octopath does no attempts to switch things up or even disguise it.

You're doing something very wrong if random battles take 5 minutes for you.

It can take about 5 minutes if you're going against enemies you don't know the weakness of and they have a lot of HP. I remember those chameleon enemies that had a lot of HP and only had an axe as a weakness. With that said, if you know their weakness and it takes you 5 minutes then yeah you're definitely doing something wrong.

Combat was great and refreshing for a turn based game, art style was phenomenal, but the story is awful and how the stories don't converge meaningfully kinda makes it seem shallow.

Despite the criticism I'm looking forward to soldiering on, interesting how it's either hate with a passion or like.

They do but it's kinda post-game and requires a bunch of specific side-quests to be completed.

The art style is really nice, the music is absolutely incredible, and the voice acting is on point. The battle system is incredibly fun, strategizing the right combination of moves to break enemies in as few turns as possible is rewarding, and the job system is amazing. I wont spoil what they are, but you also get additional secret classes later on for even more customization.

The individual stories themselves are pretty good as well. Olberic, Primrose, and Hannits are particular standouts. People rag on the way the stories are disjointed from each other, but with free form nature of how you do each chapter, accounting for every possible combination of parties for every story event would have been damn near impossible. You'd have to start with the same character and meet everyone in a linear fashion for the story to work the way everyone wanted.

That said, dungeon designs and actual chapter structure are pretty repetitious. It will always be: go to town -> be presented with plot device -> use path action to progress -> go through a short, linear dungeon area -> boss

Dont neglect the sidequests, btw. That's one of the only ways to get stat boosting nuts

I've struggled with side quests - they're incredibly vague.

I'm hoping once I have all characters and understand the world better that they'll click into place.

I got stuck on Omar or whoever and gave up.
I think it had potential.

The true final boss is garbage though. Such a ridiculous spike in difficulty and if you want to retry him you have to do the boss gauntlet each time. Talk about tedious.

I never beat it.

Spoiler alert:

They don't.

There is an overarching connection between the stories, but its vague, behind the scenes, and hidden behind sidequests.

The game had potential and has a number of high quality features, like the art style, battle system, and music, but the story and the way it is presented is almost unforgivably bad.

I give the game a 6/10. I'd give it a 5/10, but Patrick Seitz carries the cast on his fucking back with his role as Olberic.

Yeah they will. The quests are vague, but eventually you'll read some dialogue about X, and then realize for example like "oh yeah, that guy in Clearbrooke wanted to know about X" or vice versa

i love love love the battle system and the class/character system.

love the art style / aesthetics

disliked how disjointed the stories were. after the first chapter they should have started to come together.
