It's a cultural practice. All because you are against tipping you aren't to abolish tipping by not tipping. If you're in Japan you don't tip. If you're in America you tip 20%

Tipping is not optional. Try not tipping. You get a dirty look and the waiter only gets paid minimum wage instead of a living wage.

If the service was slow then bad tip. Tip literally stands for to insure promptness. If they aint prompt they get bad tip.

And if they mess up my food fuck them. I get that it was the kitchen but I fucking told the waiter what I wanted. If they were too fucking stupid to double check what I wanted then their tip will suffer.

The plates have been cleared, the credit cards swiped, and the black pens placed on the table.

1. "Tipping is optional."
Sure, tipping is optional just like most common courtesies are technically optional. But imagine slamming a door in somebody's face while yelling, "HOLDING THE DOOR FOR YOU IS OPTIONAL!" You're not wrong, but you are being a jerk.

Appealing to emotion here.

2. "I can't afford to tip."
Then you can't afford to eat out, and there's no shame in that. Cook a nice meal at home instead.

Converse error here.

3. "Tipping is a stupid system. Restaurants should just pay their servers a fair wage instead."
Good news! Lots of servers agree with you. Feel free to write your congressperson about this but in the meantime, keep tipping so your servers can pay their bills. And by the way, if restaurants ever DO get rid of tipping, they'll probably raise prices to cover their labor costs. So it won't actually save the customer much money.
4. "Our check was over $200! You really think they deserve 40 bucks just for waiting on us?"
Yup! And by the way, that $40 has to be shared with the host, bussers, food runners, bartenders...and then Uncle Sam gets his share. So it's actually a lot less than $40 by the time it reaches the server's pocket.
5. "Nobody tips ME at MY job."
That's because your employer pays you a livable wage. Servers, on the other hand, typically only make a few bucks per hour, and most of that goes to taxes. Tips are how waiters survive.

Restaurant employers are required to makeup the difference between what they pay their employees and the minimum wage, should their tips don't cover it.

6. "My food came out wrong."
That's unfortunate, but your server isn't the one who cooked your meal. Bring the issue to their attention and give them a chance to make it right before you take away their pay.

I agree on this case, to give the waiter a chance to fix the mistake.

I don't want to read the rest of this garbage.

What restaurants in the US have no tipping?

I believe in giving them a living wage.
Most of those are just unskilled worker entitlement.

Tipping culture is fucking stupid, pay them a living wage and end this bullshit, most other countries do not have tipping and they are better for not having it.

End tipping, give a living wage.

What a shitty article. Of course it's buzzfeed. Each point is just a stupid gif and a line or two of a flimsy argument. Tipping is fucking stupid and it's one of a few reasons why I avoid eating at restaurants as much as possible. That being said, I do generously tip at restaurants, even when just picking up, because I have no idea if tipping too low would bring about the wrath of some dickwad who will mess with my food the next time I go there, if I ever do.
Also, there are servers that want to keep the practice tipping, generally attractive white women, because they likely receive tips that greatly outpace the wages of many other jobs they could apply for and perhaps even surpass the wages of some jobs out of their reach.
The best reason to end tipping is that the research on it has shown a racial bias. White servers get tipped higher by both white and black patrons than black servers do. The current system unintentionally exacerbates a racial pay gap.

I remember hearing a labor attorney on Freakonomics claim that he thought the Supreme Court would actually find restaurant tipping to be unconstitutional if a case was ever brought before them.

I agree with some of it, disagree with some as well. No way in hell should I tip them for shitty service.

Well the problem is that amounts received from tips isn't exactly fair. It's typically less down to hard work and more down to how attractive you are.

It's a hell of a lot more optional than the alternative way of servers making more money. Encourages good work behavior, too.

It's supposed to work like that in theory, in practice it really doesn't improve service that much on average.

It's been a decade since I was in the US and my memory is fuzzy. Can people that have eaten in different countries give an idea of whether food (eating out) is cheaper in the US? I'm wondering if by comparison the US under or overpays and if that 15% would be a lot or not.

Well I work hard. Really fucking hard. I train servers and they often quit during training saying "I have a new found respect for servers, I don't think I handle it" because I make them follow me around everywhere and see what it takes to be good. Why do people want to punish me for that hard work by disallowing customers to tip me?

So you want to keep an overall unfair system around because it personally benefits you? With your work ethic, I'm sure you'd be able to find another way to make money. Do you think this unfair system is the only way you can get paid more?
If people want to earn extra through tips, that's fine. I'm just saying that a living wage should be the starting point. Any bonuses you earn are yours.

The point is, it should be the employers' responsibility to ensure you get paid enough, no matter how attractive or ugly or skin color you are.

Attitudes like tipping culture is exactly why companies can get away with calling their people "contractors" in other industries.

you guys complain about waiters getting minimum wage, but at the same time, complain when McDonald workers want to raise minimum wage to $15. Does not compute. If the waiter/waitress wants to get paid better, find another job!

Tipping is optional. I would not get arrested for not tipping.

Do I think it's a shitty system? Absolutely. Do I tip, regardless of service? Absolutely (especially since slow service is rarely the waiter's fault, mostly the kitchen). But tipping is optional, and that is factually true (barring restaurants that automatically add 18% gratuity for parties of X or more guests)
