Life in prison. You can still dedicate your life to something academic- unless you're just a useless nut job.
When the Chinese invade in the early 40's it'll give me a chance to redeem myself a la Gears of War or whatever.

Fear of death plus some semblance of hope. Maybe your sentence would be lessened; maybe you could escape. And--not that I'm advocating suicide--you could likely kill yourself later if you found that it became unbearable.

"become an academic" (all this knowledge and literally nothing to do with it)
