Is it ok for a boss to scream at their employees?

A few years ago I worked for a lawyer. He was fucking awful... he would literally scream at the top of his lungs right in your face. He would constantly swear at his employees and call us things like mentally retarded, etc. He went completely off his rocker for a typo or a missing comma in an email, or if he asked us for a document and it took more than a few seconds to find it, things like that.

I worked there for a few months and there were three different secretaries during the time I was there. One secretary was constantly throwing up in the bathroom during her last week there because she couldn't handle the stress

Anyway...

Do you think it's ok for a boss to act like this?
I don't hate people, people hate me.
No that is abusive.

Fuck no. Some of that sounds like it borders on abuse. Anyone who thinks they have productive workers when you treat them like that needs to be sent to a mental hospital.
No.
One... not professional. Cant manage under that emotion. Its impulsive and counterproductive.

Impulsive because youll be onesided and not think openly.

Counterproductive because employees wont be comfortable under such working environment

If someone did this to me, I would come down on them so hard (verbally).

I hate managers like that. I've had a few, though (although not as bad as the one you described). The girl throwing up in the bathroom, that sounds horrible. How do these people not get sued for emotional distress or bullying?

No wonder so many people hate managers in general.

My supervisor in a previous job didn't like me from day one, which effected my confidence and performance. She was responsible for training me, and she was going through the work at her own pace while I was writing things down and because she wasn't the kind of person you could just say "hey, slow down" to, I couldn't write things down fast enough.

I would also get told off whatever i did....

If I asked a colleague sitting at the next desk what to do, she would tell me off.
If I asked another supervisor what to do, she would tell me off for undermining her.
If I went to ask her for help, she would tell me off as she was busy.
If I sat and waited for her to be free, she would tell me off for not doing the work.
If I tried doing the work and got it wrong, she would tell me off.

The thing is that she was in her 40s... not exactly a fragile little girl.

It was a horrible work environment.

This is the right idea IMO, unless you're about to get evicted or something it's not worth it. I guess you could also just stay and keep your head down and not really care whether or not you get fired until you can find a new job, so at least that way you don't have to risk a long period of unemployment.

But yeah there's no way someone as stubbornly independent as I am would take this kind of shit.
I may not go down in history, but I will go down on your sister.
Well in my case I was working there as an intern so I had to finish my internship... I was kind of stuck with him, because there's a stigma for leaving in the middle of an internship

Another thing about him was that he was so distrusting, and he made you know. Once he was mad at me because he asked me to send him something and he said I didn't sent it. So I said that I sent him the file by email and he said he didn't receive it. So I was like, "it's ok, I'll just email it to you again."

So he said something like "no, don't just email me the file again, forward me the email that you say you sent me"

It's like if he wanted to make a point to let me know that he didn't believe me.

No. They're in a position of power and know that the employee can't yell back.

No, it's never okay for a boss to scream at their employees. There are ways to talk to people and get results w/o screaming.
I think there's no law stopping them from yelling at their employees provided what they're actually saying doesn't go into abusive or discriminatory territory, but it's a shit practice and would probably be awful for worker morale.

Fuck that, no one should have to put up with that level of abuse.

Has anyone ever taken a swing at him? They would probably regret it, but getting screamed at constantly is very emotionally damaging and I could see someone hitting their breaking point and losing control of themselves in that situation.
l wouId quit in no time.

Not that I know of.

He's a pretty respected lawyer with 40+ years of experience. In front of outside people, like clients or visitors, he's super smiling and charming. But the minute the door is closed he literally becomes a monster.

And it's a small office, there's always no more than 5 or 6 people employed at the same time. It's not like you could go to human resources or anything.

Bosses like this would get knocked the fuck out if they pulled that shit on me.

An employer cussing a person out, insulting them, being verbally and mentally abusive is not ok. Someone does that shit to me they will be eatting a knuckle sandwich.

Only in very specific instances is it okay.

It's not that odd, like I said people have their breaking points and might lose control of themselves in the moment. I'm honestly surprised it hasn't happened yet. You emotionally damage someone enough and they might not care if they go to jail.

Another thing he used to do...

Say, I had some documents I needed him to sign.

I would go in his office, knock politely and enter (the doors were always open)

And he would sit and be typing on the computer and not even acknowledge that I was there. So I feel awkward, like, do I say "excuse me", do I sit down, do I stay standing? He obviously knows that I'm there.

And like, maybe one, or two minutes would go by and he's completely ignoring me. Then all of a sudden he turns to me and says "what?" in a kind of aggressive tone, as if he's trying very hard not to scream.

So I show him the documents and he just takes a pen and signs super fast then pushes the papers to the edge of the desk and goes back to his computer screen.

That's not necessarily abusive in and of itself, but it's just the little things like that... over and over again, all day long. Also, when I spoke to him on the phone he never, ever, ever said "bye" or anything. He would just hang up in my face, every single time. I don't think I ever seen him say anything before hanging up. He said what he had to say, then *click*

my supervisor used to say how she could hit me when she got frustrated. it never physically happened, and she couldn't hurt me even if she did, but she would still say it several times and also to another new colleague in her early 20s.

Employees who sont stand up for themselves in that situation dont help their cause.

Employment laws exist for a reason

Document everything with audio, video, and notes

Go to the newsmedia if needed

I had a bad boss who ripped off his employees. I documented everything and our government started to look into him. He was deported back to kuwait for some serious crimes

Depends. In my case I was an intern. A lot of employment laws don't apply to interns, for example minimum wage.

Quintons fatass way back there. Homie cant keep his pants up. Tryna borrow a belt I'm like Nobody here wear size EQUATOR !!
It would be hard for me not to spit in someone's mouth if they yelled in my face at the top of their lungs.
We're whalers on the moon, we carry a harpoon, but there ain't no whales, so we tell tall tales, and sing our whaling tune.
There are definitely a few situations in which I would think it's acceptable for an employer to yell at an employee, like gross negligence or incompetence that seriously injures the business deal or something.

That said it's probably not justified in the vast majority of cases where stuff like that happens.
