Is "American" an ethnicity?

Here I mean American (as in USA).

I have mixed feelings on this issue. The New World (the whole Americas) is complicating the issue for me. In Europe and elsewhere its a bit easier.

Please note:

There is American (the majority of US citizens)
but also in the last few censues they have an American option for ethnicty.

Only if you're a Native American

Maybe Latinos could count too.
Awww, isn't that cute? He thinks he can beat me!
depends if the Natives think so. Black people were made in America too, so technically Black people too.

BAWSE!

Only people who are native can claim it as an ethnicity.
Would you follow a blind man?
I would if I was in the dark
my understand is that when the US was created,

the biggest groups would be whites then blacks, with a minority of native americans.

does that sound right?

I imagine whites would be mostly English, Scottish, Irish, German (some French and Spanish).
I dont know how much the whites and blacks mixed back then.

yes, America is a fairly unique blend of subcultures and it is distinctly different sub national category of nation because of it.
Sigs are boring
Who are you people that are voting yes? Ethnicity is not racial or cultural even though all ethnic groups do have a unique culture that's only theirs. Ethnicity can be traced through DNA. That's why DNA tests are specific on which ethnic groups DNA you carry.

How can anybody think that a multicultural, multiracial, multiethnic country like America has 1 ethnicity?

generally speaking ethnicity includes ancestry, but also goes beyond that to include language and culture.

dna tests for "population clusters" finding groups of people who have similar dna today.

In about another hundred years or so....currently not really unless you count native american as its own thing.
Put your grasses on...
Definitely not "American," but you could perhaps get something close to it if you narrow it down to smaller regions. Like "Midwestern" or something.

It would be nice if thought of ourselves as one ethnicity instead of a fuck ton of different groups that all hate each other for no good reason.

Latinos are a mix between the indigenous people and the Spanish, and we're still considered an etchnicity.

not exactly true.

Latinos and Hispanics can be of any race(s). African and European mixed can be Hispanics in Latin America (called Mulatto).

what you refer to mix of indegenous and Spanish is called Mestizo. it is a racially mixed group. I dont know if you can call it ethnicity.

Ethnicity no, culture yes. Ethnicity =/= culture.
from the comments here, im concluding that

American is a nationality and culture,
but not an ethnicity (unless you count simply American aboriginals/natives).

America is the name given to the land that Natives we're already on. If they don't consider themselves American, they're not American. If they do, then they're the only ones qualified.

America is a mix of cultures from other lands. It's not an old enough nation for anybody to be trying to call it their "ethnicity," and America's stance on "race" is purely arbitrary and make believe. BUT there are those arrogant enough to do it. The "Regular Americans." The type who ask where PoC are from, not satisfied with the answer being "American." But when you ask them in response, they're like, "Oh, I'm just plain American. Regular American."
