Do you believe that Jews are an ethnic group?

I think we all agree that Jews are certainly followers of Judaism.
But how about ethnicity?

According to some Jewish sects, only the child of the mother can be Jewish.
Do you agree with this line of thought?

Or does having a Jewish mother and father count equally?

A poster who talks about how the "anglosphere" is being destroyed makes me feel that the motivations behind this topic are highly, highly suspect.

no idea what you mean. do you want to intervene my topics simply to troll? you dont have to keep reposting that above line.
i prefer to stay on topic. purpose of the topic is obvious im just curious because I know many people have differing views on that subject.

as for the mother thing, no not really. Maybe if it's a religious thing, but genes get passed on by both parents so

Judaism has matrilineal succession, IIRC.

Edit: I think it's Orthodox Judaism, or something like that.

Here are some of the Jewish ethnogroups I know:

Ashkenazi (Jews who lived in Germany, Scandivia, and Eastern Europe). This is the largest group.
Sephardi (Jews who lived in Spain, Portugal, France).
Mizrahi (Jews who lived in the Middle East the whole time)
Maghrebi (those who lived in North Africa).

(sometimes the last 2 are grouped with Sephardi).

There are groups of Jews in Africa, for example in Ethopia, but they werent treated to well in Israel.

Jews were an ethnic group at one point. It was originally an exclusive religion that you could not convert to. That literally didn't change until Jerusalem & the temple was destroyed.

ethnicity is a little different from race.

Naw the Jews proselytized a lot during Hellenistic times (when Judaism was recognized as a thing) and the bible even talks about Alien Residents (a term for converts such as Uriah the Hittite, Doag the Idumean, and Ebed-Melech the Ethiopian) and had provisions for them.

Sure its both an ethnic and a religious group, but I still think its much more of a religious group than ethnic, at least today.

When most Jews give up the religion, which is increasingly the norm, they stop being "Jews" within like two generations because they assimate into the mainstream. I feel like you dont really see generations of ethnic Jews like you do with other ethnic groups like Hispanics or blacks once they're secularized.. Once they lose the religion I wonder if there's anything that really binds them as a group. But maybe I'm ignant.

Almost every Jew at my work place admitted to being an atheist. They just usually follow the traditions however.
