I get, both in-universe and out, why they might zero their new calendar on a significant event... but why the Battle of Yavin? That would be like setting a new year 0 for the real world at the Battle of Dunkirk or the Battle of Moscow. Why would you not use the Battle of Endor, when the Emperor was killed and the Empire was, in essence, defeated?

Someone give me Walt Disney's address so I can have them correct this.
Kill 1 man: You are a murderer. Kill 10 men: You are a monster.
Kill 100 men: You are a hero. Kill 10,000 men, you are a conqueror!

Money speaks louder than people, so you'd better have a lot of the former on-hand to have them retcon stuff or whatever.
Number VI: Larxene.
The Organization's Not-That-Geezer's-Heart-Tank.
I think it was like that prior to Disney even.

This, BBY was always a fan thing though.
Should use the founding of the Empire as year 1, honestly.
What would Bligh do?
I completely misunderstood what this topic was about.

I was about to talk about the mating rituals of star wars nerds... now I have to put these light sabre shaped objects away.

Out of universe, BY is 0 because that's the first movie.

In universe, because it was seen as the "beginning" of the Rebellion. To parallel real life, we don't date based on Jesus's death, we use his birth. The Empire used the founding of the Empire as year 0 for similar reasons, and the Republic used the founding of the Republic (or the Ruusan reformations, idk how it works in new canon).

Also I thought this topic was gonna be about incest or interspecies dating or something.

Except it wasn't, because the Rebellion had been in operation for several years before the Battle of Yavin (and if you're talking "rebellion" rather than "The Rebellion", that started pretty much as soon as the Empire did).

Sure, but you'd think Star Wars would want to zero their years on the founding of the New Republic, rather than the Rebellion (and you'd run into the political issue of whether the distinction should go to the official Alliance to Restore the Republic or the various composite movements that eventually coalesced into it).

Again, to use a parallel, Americans don't celebrate the founding of the US as the day when the Sons of Liberty first formed, nor the day of their victories at Lexington and Concord; they celebrate it as when the country declared independence from the British crown.

I think to the majority of the galaxy it was though. The Rebellion wasn't really widely acknowledged as a legitimate entity before then. It was seen as a variety of loosely connected groups and not a formal organization.

Same. I was like "is courting and marriage really all that different in the SW universe?"
