Star Ocean must be a shit series if Second Story is "the good one"

Battles are nothing but a shitshow of mashing the A button while characters scream out their moves. No strategy whatsoever. Eventually you get to the point where you get more experience by NOT fighting random encounters and letting your party members kill them instantly. Of the like three encounters I couldn't beat the first time, the solutions all came down to "use a ring that makes you immune to the bosses attack."

SO2 has always been a breakable game, but stuff like not fighing the randm encounters is exclusive to the recent remake.

I like how right as I'm about to fight the last boss I unlock the ability that the game warns me lets me make "game breaking items." Like I wasn't breaking the entire game as soon as I hit level 40.

Also suffers from the Octopath problem of all party members but two being optional, so of course none of them are important to the story, they just get a random line every 10 minutes or so.

Ive always hated the voice actors in those games. Its like they purposely hired the most cheesy actors possible

Yes, it isn't a great series. Most of its games are bad and this "best one" is only decent or mildly fun.

Only played V but based on that it seems like a very mediocre series yeah.

First and second game together are an interesting story and connected universe. The battle system got a little dumber in the second game weirdly. The first had some crazy ideas, like your healer joining your party at different times and is random by play through. My first time I was so unlucky she joined basically at the final fight. I had to grind her up levels. Which was easy because you could learn music. Music let you trigger fights. You could learn carrier pigeons and send them shopping for you while you're in the middle of a dungeon. Combine these for unlimited grinding and supplies.
But that first also just had random combat everywhere that was nothing but spamming your B button.
If you check the wiki in the games you'll see all 3 games actually connected. The third even describes races you never see because they were in the first 2 games. The invisible ship that attacks in 3 is an evolution of the ship made in game 1 using the blood of the people there

what I like about star ocean is how it plays like a good episode of star trek, where your space stuff is just the pretext to adventure

they're all pretty shit tier

however, 3 is unique in that it essentially killed any progress the series could make

I think everything you said is true, still I liked the game when I played it for PSP but yeah it was pretty braindead and I question why this game is being remade again and again.
