First and second game together are an interesting story and connected universe. The battle system got a little dumber in the second game weirdly. The first had some crazy ideas, like your healer joining your party at different times and is random by play through. My first time I was so unlucky she joined basically at the final fight. I had to grind her up levels. Which was easy because you could learn music. Music let you trigger fights. You could learn carrier pigeons and send them shopping for you while you're in the middle of a dungeon. Combine these for unlimited grinding and supplies.
But that first also just had random combat everywhere that was nothing but spamming your B button.
If you check the wiki in the games you'll see all 3 games actually connected. The third even describes races you never see because they were in the first 2 games. The
