anyone want to come with me? I am planning on driving 50km both ways so I can compete for a parking spot in order to walk on a dirt path for 2 hours.

just kidding. everybody does this here, I just don't fully get why. I used to live like 5 minutes from a lake where I could take a sandwich up the hill and it was a relaxing way to spend a couple hours. unbeknownst to me, people were driving for over an hour just to do the same thing. I think people who don't play games must be really bored.
I enjoy hiking well enough but I am not a true outdoorsy person.

I've done those hikes where you leave at 4AM to drive 2 hours to get somewhere before it gets disgustingly crowded and while the whole ordeal is neat because of the grandiose scale, I live right next to a huge county park, such as that the trails directly connect to the end of my dead end street, so I can hike on demand, whenever I want on 22 small trails.

So I am very fortunate that I have that literally right in my back yard, because for me, I wouldn't drive to do it, but since I can do it all on foot, I walk semi regularly back there, maybe a couple times a month in good weather.

I used to walk along established trails in my local state parks that would take about 2 hours to finish. Nothing wrong with that. It's a nice way to stay fit.

Depending on which park I was going to, it could be anywhere from 5 miles away to about 20 miles away. But I never had to fight over parking spots, all my local parks had ample parking, and they were never really crowded.

I like hiking when I travel to other states/countries where the landscape is noticeably different from home. I agree that it's a little silly if you're staying local, though I imagine for some people they really do have to drive an hour to find someplace nice that hasn't already been developed.
And with that... pow! I'm gone!
Got to do a hike yesterday that was a short train ride away and wasn't crowded at all. Got to see a good view of that one mountain, too.

I'd hike a lot more if there were trails near me that had tree cover. But I have to drive 3 hours to get tree canopy cover in Arizona from where I live. I am waaaaay too white to hike in the bare sun for hours. It's absolute hell. Especially if it's 100 degrees.

Oh sorry, I'll try to find some royal purples and fireball fuchsias next time I'm up there.
