Rabbit and Steel, a four-player raiding game that feels like FFXIV (has a demo)

you want spell-in-waiting (more reminiscent of TEA than e2s)? you want exaflares? you want to break some tethers? you want cone aoes targetting all party members that's only telegraphed by a cast bar? you want a barrage of soak-then-spread mechanics? you want aoes that rapidly expand after a few seconds? you want starboard/larboard (visually telegraphed on Normal thank god) while you try to mentally parse three other of those mechanics at the same time? this game's for you. it cuts down on the rotation difficulty (you have 4 skills) to focus more on those sweet raid mechanics

it's not perfect but it's pretty damn fun for a mostly one-person project (One Step From Eden composer did the music tho). one thing to note is that apparently the demo when going singeplayer is more bullet hell-y than the actual game, they toned it down and added more raid mechanics since that build

runs on normal difficulty feel like they're about an hour or so; it's a roguelike so you do pick out 5~ items (party members roll on them) and 3~ skill modifications (a different assortment each shop, enough to buy one for one of your four skills), but they're not ridiculously synergistic like some other roguelikes are

i would @ entity and papercup but I think y'all have some profile settings only allowing @'s from friends or something. the demo is at least worth a try, preferably multiplayer

An experience similar to raiding in a WoW-like MMO, but without having to schedule around, rely on, or talk to other people? Colour me intrigued. I'll have to check out the demo

I can't speak for FFXIV, but most raid bosses in WoW functionally were (at least the last time I paid attention to WoW, which was like 2010), just with a ground-level perspective. Positioning, dodging AoE attacks, and other movements that happen as part of executing any given fight rarely include any sort of verticality, which means they're effectively 2D bullet hells (or at least bullet hell-adjacent games) masquerading as 3D games. Abstracting them into 2D doesn't actually take much of anything away from the fights' executions.

ffxiv has more "if you don't do this, EVERYONE dies" mechanics than wow, that's the major distinction. this game will still target your corpse with shit that will damage other players if not positioned correctly

game's still fantastic

I unlocked a class last night that's sort of like a hybrid of mch/mnk that fixes GCD to 0.8s for 5 seconds at a time and it's pretty lit

hard difficulty feels like savage raid difficulty, which is sort of undoable with my friends because they think stuff like aoes being telegraphed in less straightforward ways is bullshit

I think they took down the demo. At least, I'm not seeing it anymore. How vexing.

No demo showing for me, either. I know I'll like the game though, I just have a bit on my plate now with having recently purchased a Meta Quest 3 and Ghost of Tsushima just coming out yesterday
