I think it was changed to redirect back to twitter.com somewhat recently- before, if you clicked an x.com link, it would still lead to x.com
it's his strange fascination with the letter X conflicting with the actual brand recognition of twitter, probably. he's had the domain since the very early paypal days (edit: actually it stayed with paypal after he got ousted as CEO, but he bought it back a few years ago)
