As someone across the pond from Britain, he didn't cross my view until "Get Him to the Greek". Everyone loved the movie, I thought it was goddawful, and I like pretty bad movies.
I've now re-watched a lot of old British gameshows from the early 00s when he was far, far more prominent in Britain. He's extremely dirty. I know it's a fine line that some people can ride, but he said some pretty gross stuff and wrote it too (in Booky-Wook). When I'd see that book on the shelves I still thought of him as a bizarre attention-seeker that wasn't funny.
Then lo-and-behold, when I move in with a conspiracy theorist, it turns out Brand's new addiction is media attention (oh wait, old new addiction) from YouTube. He already did that before, but now he's streamlined things for media consumption means instead of just laying on his bed and pontificating. Even back then when he sounded far more Leftist, I considered his insistence 'not to vote' a betrayal of his actual intent...aka nothing but attention.
