Do you think this was racially insensitive?

Fox & Friends is embroiled in controversy after it aired a Halloween segment showing a black child dressed up as a WATERMELON!!

The segment was slammed as racially insensitive with social media users voicing outrage which has struggled with a string of controversies.

A number of children were invited to the studio to display costumes for the Halloween holiday and kids dressed as rainbows and robots were featured..until it moved onto "organic fruit" costumes.

A presenter says "Lucas is our watermelon" before a child of ethnic minority is introduced.

The reaction was swift as users condemned the network for the move

One user said "Overt racism, foolishm racism, or tone deaf racism?"

Another said "No, they don't get the benefit of the doubt, Fox & Friends dresses up black child as watermelon for Halloween"

But others defended the network as one person said "Let's be clear, watermelon is not racist and neither is fried chicken. signed black lady in NC. People nowadays have lost their minds"

The racist stereotype of portraying African Americans as excessively fond of watermelon began during the 19th century, shortly after slaves won their freedom. Watermeon became a staple crop for black farmers after emancipation.

Southern whites threatened new agricultural competitors and still reeling from the loss of war and responded by associating watermelons with racist tropes aimed at black people.

I love Fox & Friends "racial insensitivity." If it's "racially insensitive," I love it.
I don't know why they're even associated in the first place, but whatever it is, isn't that stereotyping, not racism?

oh... nm I guess
They probably saw it coming or something. I don't really care. Shittiest network stays shittiest network.
If it were anyone but Fox News, I'd give them the benefit of the doubt as just something they overlooked. But when it's Fox News, specifically, they don't really have a great track record on racial sensitivity =/
Who's your favorite character from "Bend It Like Beckham"? And you can't say Beckham.
lol it doesnt really matter
Regardless of their intention, surely someone at some point said "hey, uh, are you sure we should use the black kid for the watermelon?"

Race is such a touchy subject for Americans. People need to find a way to get over it. It only has power because it is given power.

This is one of those "sound smarter by saying it" things that's technically true, but for practical purposes, pretty meaningless. Racists don't like giving up that power so easily.

Yes, its racially insensitive. I don't think they did it on purpose, they just... didn't think at all before doing it. A common problem with Fox.

So it didn't even occur to them that it might be an issue, or it might be viewed as such. It didn't cross their minds. So it was insensitive, but not offensive.
