Yup. Tom was the cat and Jerry was the mouse. I liked Tom since he was so smug sometimes and would get his comeuppance. I liked it when his body changed shape as a result of being hit with things.

I used to watch the shows all the time years and years ago when syndicated tv would show the old shorts.

Right, and Jerry was the mouse because "Jerry" rhymes with "cherry", and "cherry" starts with the letter 'c' as does "cheese", and "cheese" = "mouse", get it?

I remember that Tom is the cat because it's a play on the noun tomcat. That is the only way I can remember, to be honest.

I recall an episode that ends with Tom trapping Jerry and the duckling character under a bucket. He laughs evilly and slowly lifts up the bucket as the duckling screams, and the episode ends.

Really?? I can't say I've seen it. But I'd love to. Hehe! Ah, sweet satisfaction. Tom has finally succeeded. I'm happier now.
