The fewer the better.
One day dude, I'm just gonna get off the bus, and I'm gonna run in the woods and never come back, and when I come back I'm gonna be the knife master!

Pretty been much self-employed all my life...now trying to get my start-up going.

My problem is I often work harder/smarter than those around me and I tend to be silent/focused as I do it. So I'm not much of a social butterfly when working.
Less people = less drama.
Only "real" job I've had was a place that had about 120 at peak, which seemed like a decent number. That's about right on the threshold where you can know almost everyone there, or at least their name. I don't think I'd like a small workplace since I imagine it would be harder to make friends there.
Just me. My other coworker is missing.
I will change this when I think of something new.

I work at a huge retail store, so only like 90 at most in the store at any one time, but i think the total store employs more than 500 people, but i do prefer large workplaces

Yep less people less hassle.
Still waters run deep
My I work with a couple dozen co-workers, and that's fine for me. It's enough people that there is someone to go to for help if I really need it but not so much that I'm constantly bumping into anyone or getting distracted.

Granted, when I was younger and started out 'working' regular jobs, (18), having many co-workers was ok.

But as I got older and more ambitious, having many co-workers (and many supervisors and bosses) can get annoying, QUICK.
The only reason I have my current job is because I managed to find an opening for a shift where I work alone. I've worked with partners before and it was 8 hours of torture, I hated it. I have to spend 5 minutes with the other workers during shift change, and that stresses me out. Plus, now there's a new guy who arrives in 40 minutes early to sit in the office and talk... I despise that so much. Just leave me alone, please.

you need to force yourself to get more sociable, that would solve a lot of your problems

Fewer = / = better, but more than 100 is definitely too much. Hell, 50 is definitely too much. I would prefer no more than 30 co-workers, including managers and the like.

I know, but it's stressful to be around people. It's pretty much the thing I hate most in life. >_<

Read that at first as having a lot of female coworkers. At any rate, 11-25 co-workers is a good number; more specifically 15-25.

do you have any close friends besides your family? do you socialize at all with others at your work?

Honestly, I'd say <100 is fine with me.

Unfortunately, there's like 500 or so in the building where I work so it's a little busy. Company-wide is around 5,000. And yeah, our 5-person help desk/tech support team covers this 5,000 group.
Coworkers that I interact with or coworkers that happen to work at the same place that I don't interact with?

I've never had a job where I interact with more than 25 coworkers. The second is largely irrelevant to me.

I don't have any friends at all, and I'm not terribly close with my family either. And no, work socialization is all. Gamefaqs is pretty much my entire sicial life.

Preference is solo but no option. Voted 100+. In my experience the drama vs amount of people has always been inversely related when people > 1.
