New anticheat Vanguard is spyware that can take over and even control features and settings on your computer. Some people getting message telling them to delete System32. Highly recommended to uninstall at this time even if it's not in active use.

Edit: the source I linked to seems to have a media tab that's would get this topic deleted, whoops lol. Regardless, issue is the same.

Riot has also banned all Vanguard discussion on their subreddit, and all posts discussing the issue at being deleted.

yep, this topic's about as trustworthy as the average Trump tweet

I saw that elsewhere where the guy updated his BIOS and then upon booting up his computer Vanguard kept yelling at him that certain window files were an issue and blocked it from running. He wasn't able to reinstall windows due to it as well. The only solution was a clean install of windows after wiping the drive.

From what I understand it runs at the kernel level in the cpu and all the time 24/7, regardless if the game is running or not. So that's fun.

Even if it isn't actually breaking PCs, I don't want a game launcher of all things having that much control over my computer.

Luckily I haven't played a Riot game in over a decade

All modern anti cheat is kernel level. The other ones don't actually block cheating.

This isn't exactly news, sadly- it's been in the pipeline for a couple of months now that League proper was going to start running it. Given I am extremely suspicious of Riot's motives in general, I stopped playing it when that notice came out, and if I want to hate myself for playing the genre, there's always Dota (and to a lesser extent, HotS.)

I think Vanguard is one of the few that's always on, though. Most other anti-cheats only run when the game runs.
It's Reyn Time.
But also League client updates have caused me Bluescreens at least twice in the past.

It sucks cause some form of better bot detection was absolutely needed. League games were being botted at a really high rate.

But this thing sucks.

Yeah according to Riot, 10-15% of games in Master tier had a scripter. That's kind of insane

Even in trashcan ranks they're everywhere. The amount of times a Windshitter would ult the split second of a popup or a female Dante would pull off her full combo in two frames and ult...

Just playing normal games you could identify a bot in nearly half the games.

There were sometimes bots popping up in ARAM of all places.

All kernel level anti-cheats are always-on, AFAIK. Miyoho games like Genshin Impact and Honkai Star Rail are included in this.

farming levels and blue dust to sell accounts I would guess

But yeah I'm okay with anti cheat if it means I'll be stop seeing so many bots in solo q

You get more than just blues eith chests and keys and stuff.

The support and jungle bots especially are more than capable of turning in s ranks.
And lower surrender times have made it easier since any one lane getting stopped means premature game over.

Hey everyone! League team and the Anti-Cheat team here with an update on Vanguard. Weve been following a lot of the Vanguard conversations that have been raised either here or on other social platforms and we wanted to give some clarification on a few of the popular points you might have seen.
Overall, the rollout has gone well and were already seeing Vanguard functioning as intended. Weve already seen a hard drop off of bot accounts in the usual places, and we will continue to monitor this.
Since 14.9 went live, fewer than 0.03% of players have reported issues with Vanguard. In most cases, these are common error codes such as VAN codes 128, 152, 1067, -81, 9001, or 68 that are easily solved through player support or troubleshooting, and account for the vast majority of issues we are seeing. There are also a few trickier situations that have popped up that were actively looking into; driver incompatibilities for example. If you're running into issues like this please contact Player Support.
We also plan on sharing a full external report with you in the coming weeks/months after Vanguard has been live for a bit.
Below are a few areas that we want to make sure we provide some additional clarity around immediately.
Bricking Hardware
At this point in time, we have not confirmed any instances of Vanguard bricking anyones hardware , but we want to encourage anyone who's having issues to contact Player Support so we can look into it and help out. Weve individually resolved a few of the major threads you may have seen so far of users claiming this with their machines and have confirmed that Vanguard wasnt the cause of the issues they were facing.
About ~0.7% of the playerbase bypassed Microsofts enforcement for TPM 2.0 when they installed Windows 11, but the rollout of Vanguard requires that those players now enable it to play the game. This requires a change to a BIOS setting, which differs based on the manufacturer. Vanguard does not and cannot make changes to the BIOS itself.
BIOS settings can be confusing, and weve seen two niche cases where its created an issue.
The first is that many manufacturers prompt a switch to UEFI mode when TPM 2.0 is enabled, but if the existing Windows 11 installation is on an MBR partition, it would become unbootable afterwards. Some OEMs support LegacyBoot mode with TPM 2.0, but to support UEFI mode, Windows 11 must be installed on a GPT partition. Microsoft has a tool that can help avoid a reformat and reinstall if youre in this scenario.
The second was a player we spoke to that accidentally also enabled SecureBoot with a highly custom configuration. While Vanguard makes use of the SecureBoot setting on VALORANT, we elected not to use it for League, due to the older hardware that comprises its userbase. Older rigs can have compatibility issues with this setting, and thats actually one of the primary reasons the Vanguard launch was delayed.
For example, some GPUs are known to have Option ROM that is not UEFI SecureBoot capable (especially older cards), and sometimes this can result from players having flashed it themselves to unlock the card. If the Option ROM isnt signed, enabling SecureBoot would prevent your GPU from rendering anything (since it wont boot), resulting in a black screen. There would be two ways to fix this: Connect the monitor to an integrated graphics card (if you have one) and then disable SecureBoot in BIOS. Remove your CMOS battery to reset back to default settings.
TL;DR - We DO NOT require SecureBoot for League of Legends. Dont enable it unless you are sure you want to.
Vanguard Screenshots
To be very clear, Vanguard DOES NOT take a screenshot of your whole computer/multiple monitors. However, it will take a picture of your game client (in fullscreen) and the region your game client occupies (in windowed/borderless) for suspicious activity related to ESP hacks.
This is a very normal practice when it comes to anti-cheat and almost all anti-cheat do this. It is also a known element within the community of folks familiar with anti-cheat software. When it comes to privacy concerns, Vanguard features are compliant with regional privacy laws, and the team works directly with Information Security teams and Compliance teams to ensure that Vanguard is safe.
As a reminder, please check out our latest blog for all the facts around Vanguard in League and we'll talk to you again soon with the full report in the coming weeks.

A riot employee on the reddit:

I was on PTO for the rollout so I was getting worried seeing some of the chatter but the data just doesn't tell the same story. We're definitely seeing some tickets for it right so some players are having a hard time and we're trying to help get those players going but overall it's going pretty well so far and I'm really looking forward to us writing the next update to talk about how effective it already is. We're seeing some good stuff at least so far.

Granted, the problems that are popping up for people seem pretty rough.
It's Reyn Time.
If you have to write a giant fuckin post on Reddit about how well the rollout of your new update is going, chances are it isn't going very well

but I don't even go here, so who knows, maybe it's fine
"You're childish. What are you getting? Are you getting strawberry? Ha! That's such a childish flavor, only children eat strawberry."
"We made it so a bunch of people have to uninstall and reinstall Windows to a different drive" isn't the clean issue they are making it out to be.

Looks like it's much less widespread than it seemed at least, assuming you believe the numbers

League has tens of millions of players. All it takes 0.001% of their playerbase to be affected and then go posting on social media for that to become the predominant narrative. I have no love whatsoever for something as invasive as Vanguard but I've been burned too many times by overreacting twitter posts not to take those with a massive grain of salt.

Wait that said, I'm also taking the developer posts with a grain of salt.
