This. We got over 200 years to look back on. Judging long ago presidents by today's standards makes them look far worse than Trump today. Woodrow Wilson literally watched the film Birth of a Nation and remarked very strongly to its accuracy. That film depicted black people (in actuality it was white people in black face) in a very minstrel show type of way and the KKK as heroic for "dealing" with the problem. This is just one example and a fairly extreme one, but presidents have done and said things in the past that may look minor compared to Trump.
Don't get me wrong, Trump is an absolute buffoon at best, but lets not look at American history with such rose colored glasses to make Trump look worse. We've had some truly terrible presidents and all sorts of others among the leadership ranks. We are very far from a perfect country.
Hey remember that whole slavery thing that only ended 150 years ago and the Jim Crow laws over 50 years ago?
A big part of why Trump is viewed as so awful is because standards for presidents and just general basic human decency have increased significantly. Put Trump in 1820 and he really doesn't look as bad. I'm sure he'd still suck at business, but people would view him as progressive for his social views.
As it stands tho, since we will judge by what our current president is doing in our current time, this is a travesty. He's lowering the bar for what is acceptable behavior, he's weakening our country on the world stage, and breeding an us vs them mentality which only weakens our country at home.
There may have been shitty people in the past, but that's the past. We should have learned, and most of us have learned those lessons. That's why its appalling. The fact people excuse or look the other way is what will be our downfall. Imagine if he's only the beginning
Yeah I agree. I'm just pointing out that a big reason Trump looks terrible is because our standards and values have changed so much. Trump is viewed worse today for sending out racist dog whistles pretty regularly than Woodrow Wilson was for endorsing a KKK propaganda film.
I won't deny that Trump is absolutely terrible for this country in just about every way.
