They had cheated during that contest. There was no way undertale could beat that many good games. Something was up.
I don't know about cheating. I just think the fervor around the game was such that Tumblr and Reddit and such had a lot of active daily visitors to the Undertale fan page, so they brigaded a couple hundred thousand votes without a ton of trouble.
