You save money. Not just in terms of rent, but also utilities and other expenses. You can also spanide tasks such as cooking and cleaning amongst your roommates. You also have more people to, say, look after animals.
This, of course, relies on finding and keeping reliable roommates, but I did once have excellent roommates I was the bad roommate. :( In my defense, I was really struggling on a personal level at the time, but I don't blame my roomies from back then if they don't want anything to do with me and my friend has two excellent roommates. They even cooperated to construct, plant, and tend a sizeable vegetable garden full of kale, tomatoes, various herbs, peppers, zucchini, etc.
