how long do you need to go to school for that?

You don't need to go to school for it. You have to study and pass an exam or two. With the exams I took:

1) CCENT (Certified Entry Networking Technican)
  • This is the entry-level Cisco certification (can't get this one any more after next month, I think).
  • Took me about 3 months to study for and pass the exam
2) CCNA (Cisco Certified Network Associate) Routing and Switching
  • Took me about another 4 months to study for and pass the exam. Took me two tries to pass this one.
3) CCNA security
  • Took me about 6 months of studying and 3 tries to pass this one.
4) CCNP (Cisco Certified Network Professional)
  • This one requires 3 separate exams.
  • CCNP ROUTE (Took me about 5 months of studying, I think)
  • CCNP SWITCH (Took me about 3 months of studying. I was rushing to get through this because a company bought out the company I was working for and I hated the new place)
  • CCNP TSHOOT (Took me about 2 weeks and 2 tries to pass the exam. The study guide was all review from the route and switch study guides, so I figured I'd just try the exam to see how I would do. The first time I failed by 10 points because I ran out of time.)

I also got a Cisco Meraki certification somewhere in the middle of all that because my job sent me to their official training class.
