It varies in quality, but it never really dips below a 7/10 and pretty much every season has at least a few episodes that are great even if the main plot isn't.

It also had a weird cross market appeal between the straight dudes that love a show about guys in flannel doing manly stuff and the women who love MLM and write fanfiction about all of them fucking each other.

It's so weird. Like Dean drives his chevvy impala in his biker jacket and boots and drinks all the time and picks up women and solves every problem by shooting it and complains about hipsters a ridiculous amount

And then also the entire show is so incredibly queer coded and the brotherly incest fanfiction practically writes itself

Yyyyyyyeah. I don't think they did it on purpose, but Dean and Castiel do have a very interesting dynamic because they are 100% in a committed relationship, but it's completely nonsexual because Dean is straight.

No, it's a thing. They even referenced it when Dean and Sam found out there was a series of in-universe Supernatural novels telling their fictionalized exploits.

Dean: "And what's a slash fan?"
Sam: "As in Sam-slash-Dean. Together."

Sam: "Yeah."
Dean: "(pause) They do know we're brothers, right?"

I always liked it. Came in at middle of season 5 never left till the last season. When it ended was around 2020 i had so much going on I missed watching it.

I always watched live too.

Previous poster is right most seasons are 7/10. 1-5 are the best you will get. 6 and 7 are the low points. 8-14 it pretty much was smooth sailing played within their own lore

I could not keep watching the show after season 8s finale I was so gosh darned annoyed.

I kinda gave up after the episode where all pagan gods were killed off, ruining a ton of plot ideas. I assume the rest of the show was limited to just Christian mythology which is limiting

There were still episodes with other gods after that. Zeus, for example, among others.

First 2 seasons were good. Turned to trash after that. I stopped watching after season 4 or 5 I think

Like some seem to turn loving someone just has to be sexual. When in reality you can love someone in a completely platonic, family bond way.

I see your point. I honestly think the fanfiction largely comes from uber nerds seeing two hot men declare their love for each other and turning it sexual, so there is something to it being a little unfair.

For a show so popular and probably one of the longest running shows ever, Ive never met anyone IRL that has watched a single episode.

I fucking love that show. Yeah it took a dip for a few seasons after the original 5 season story completed but it regained pace after the slump. I was legitimately in tears during the finale, also the finale just got done so dirty because of COVID I hate it

the Winchesters are two brothers who lost their mother at an early age and their dad was basically an absent father making Dean basically kinda become Sam's dad or at least he thinks of himself like that

there is nothing gay about it unless you think a man expressing feelings for another man even his literal brother is somehow gay which is idiotic

infact due to trauma caused by demons they found it hard to love other people as it would involve them in demon shenanigans so that only strengthened their bond as they being brothers already loved each other

however sexually we see they find some girl and fulfill that desire it is only that they worry getting too close means demons kill said person if said person wasn't already a demon tricking them

I get that fan smut exists but that has nothing to do with the central argument cause fans gonna make smut

I'm still salty we didn't get a 15-seasons-worth-retrospective set to the full version of "Carry On Wayward Son". All you needed for that was an editor, and they still couldn't manage it. -_-

It was a real thing to be sure. I would watch S1 through 5 again but IDK what it would take for me to watch the other ten seasons.

Seasons 1 - 5 are legit great. Then after that your mileage varies. It honestly seems like they typically go through a two or three season arc where the first season is set up boring nothing then the next season has the good stuff.

I'm on season 14 and it's painful at this point.

After that, it was definitely "not great, not terrible".

I remember watching the promos for that episode and I was like ugh another Monster of the week episode.

It's not that complicated. Teen girls were the target audience, and a lot of teen girls are really into guy on guy stuff, there's no shortage of fanfiction around it. They ship Castiel with the boys too.

I watched the whole series with my SO back in 2020, I believe. I really enjoyed it, but I got reaaallly bored of all the Heaven/Hell and angels/demons episodes, which iirc is just a majority of the last half of the series.

In the Latino dub Cas tells Dean he loves him and Dean says it back.

It started around the beginning of the CW, which prior to COVID was pretty well known for not cancelling shows. Basically shows would continue for as long as the people making them wanted to continue making them. And with Supernatural you really only had two actors that you needed to keep the show going, so as long as those two were interested in continuing, the show continued.

While that's true for some women, its also true we have a large part of men and women who are pretty toxic when it comes to this caricature of what a masculine man is. And when you dont fall into that caricature, you must be DL, zesty, in the closet, etc.

Like even something as simple as, "I love you." To some, that phrase alone just has to mean sexual.... Even something simple as a hug some are so toxic they turn a simple hug into a sus moment.

Supernatural just does not work without Jared and Jensen. They carried the entire show.

Wayward Sisters was the only one that had any legs IMO. Shame it didn't get picked up tbh.

Bloodlines was fucking garbage, it's a blessing they skipped that one.

The Winchesters was just a baffling decision.

Supernatural was a fun series. Im glad it lasted as long as it did.

This is 100% why I stopped watching. It happened twice at the end of consecutive seasons; and it had already abandoned the monster of the week format, which I liked, in favor of angles/demons unendingly, which I did not like.

I asked my roommate at the time (who is a huge Supernatural fan) about it and he confirmed that was basically the trend every season going forward. I thanked him for saving me a bunch of time and Ive never watched it since.

Though I have been considering watching the first two seasons again, since I remember liking those, and then just stopping.

The first 3 seasons were genuinely excellent. They had a great overarching plot being hinted at with the dad stuff, but it didn't overwhelm the core formula of them hunting ghosts and various horror story mythologies.

The angel stuff got really stupid, sadly. I checked out when leviathans were introduced.
