Yeah. This is the problem. He keeps saying he is writing it when he clearly isn't and makes dumb promises like saying fans can lock him in a cabin until it's finished if it isn't out by 5 years ago now. He brings this shit on himself and then people say why do fans keep acting entitled to a book? Like stop promising this shit if you don't want people mad at you breaking promises.

Thats been my opinion and Ive accepted it and moved on. I still love what he has already released in the main series and other stuff like Fire and Blood and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms collection of novellas.

Patrick Rothfuss is the one Im getting annoyed at.

I know of people that refuse to call the series one of the all-time greats because it's unfinished but I still rank it as probably my favorite fantasy story ever, even as-is.

At this point I don't care. Its been so long since I've read the books I would need to do a full re-read, and I don't want to have to read 6000+ pages, just to read Winds and then go back to waiting for Dream, which may never come. I'll read them if the series is completed, but at this point its been 15 years, I've kind of moved on.

What's the worst that could happen if he just says he doesn't want to finish the books

I will say I just recently reread them and it was a complete breeze despite the length. Cliche as it is to say, they really are page-turners.

wonder if he's got notes and drafts saved for when he eventually dies without completing the series? maybe someone will be able to cobble together an ending that isn't the crap from the HBO show.

honestly i've always wondered if the writers for that final season decided to tank the whole thing in hopes it would get him to finish his books out of disgust.

GRRM should just finally go "no I'm not finishing it" and let everyone (himself included) move on.

I don't really envy GRRM's position here -

• the last ASOIF book he wrote was like, season 2? of the show. So he hasn't put anything out really since the huge explosion of popularity this series got.
• So there's suddenly this huge added pressure because a lot more people are paying attention,
• GRRM isn't good at getting everything concluded to begin with,
• and what was probably reasonably close to any ending GRRM had planned was widely hated when it happened on the show (though tbf, this is more an issue of how the show got there than much of the actual content of the ending).

And the longer the wait goes, the more pressure is put upon this 80 year old man and higher expectations for the final product. He's kind of in a never-win position here, and the longer he goes without at least putting something out, the worse it'll get for everyone.

He has made it very clear that he will not allow anyone to finish his works. So I doubt he has notes saved.

Yes, there's a YouTuber named Preston Jacobs who gathered a bunch of writers together to do it. They've done like 15-20 chapters so far, it's pretty neat.

We could also get a curveball, where we'll suddenly get both Winds of Winter and Dream of Spring, but not until GRRM dies, because he doesn't wanna deal with everything surrounding the whole series anymore.

Like he's already written both of them, but just doesn't want to deal with it so they aren't releasing until he dies.

It's been too long and I no longer care. So many better series out there now. Any of y'all reading the Dungeon Crawler Carl series? My new fave of all time.

BTW have people here read/listened to the sample chapters from Winds? I'm unsure how well-known those are. They're definitely worth checking out if you haven't.

Also, supposedly GRRM gave story beats for the rest of the series when the TV show started drifting from the books. And... everyone hated all the new stuff.

Now, the biggest issue is with stuff like, pacing problems, but still probably another good reason for him to want to just go off and do other things.

yeah I think the reaction to the last season is part of why it's taking so long. they had the basic plot points but not his vision or dialogue writing.

he probably had a plan in mind and decided to change everything.

Well he did work in TV before becoming a novelist.

Elden Ring wouldn't have been the masterpiece it is without his contribution.
