You will automatically be granted Chinese citizenship and lose any other citizenships. You cant live in Hong Kong or Macau. You may leave China for 30 days per year. Racism magically wont be an issue for you, and youll be treated the same as any other Chinese citizen. You will magically acquire fluency in Mandarin.

Id move to China without all those caveats for 10 million dollars. Its not going to be massively different from where I live now, especially with all that money insulating me from many of the challenges.

However, with the caveats, only 30 days per year out of the country is a deal breaker.

I've lived in China. I wouldn't do it again under normal circumstances, but for 10 million I would probably do it. I wouldn't be very thrilled about it though.

The opening post implies as long as its not Hong Kong or Macau, anywhere in China would be permitted.

But I wouldnt live in a backwater in any country for 10 million dollars.

Do you want to live in an even more rampant consumerist society where all that matters is having money and showing off your status with even more blatant corruption, more blatant bigotry, more ridiculous nationalism, and way less freedom of expression? Because you will get that (thankfully you will have enough money to show everyone how high status you are).

It's much safer and the people are friendlier though (also the food is better and the cost of living is lower).

You mean I don't have to be in the US anymore AND I'll have the money to leave China for 30 days a year, while I currently have the capacity to leave the US zero days a year?

Yeah, the only thing that's really changing is the cuisine available lmao. With 10 mil, trust me, I'll be ok with this situation.

I've lived in the US and China. I was comparing China to the US. But for 10 million I would pick it, because that's a lot of money (more than I will make from now until retirement). I like living in Japan, as does my family, but they're all Chinese (well, kids are half Chinese), and I think we would all agree that for 10 million dollars it would be worth it.

Citizenship and residency are not the same thing. I never plan to live in my country of birth again, but Im not about to give up my citizenship.

Also, as much as it must suck to never be able to leave the US, Im sure you can appreciate that not everybody is in that position and that for some people, losing the ability to travel freely would be a major downside.

If things continue trending the way they are in the US, citizenship won't mean much of anything anyway, so it's really a non concern. I wouldn't even visit the US from China if given the opportunity lol.

This would be an instant yes. There are SO MANY options for China. The place is huge and diverse for landscape. There are plenty of choices for good sized cities if that is your preference or something smaller or even a beautiful more remote village. Plus I would speak the language? Easy yes.

So many people on gamefaqs are obsessed with Japan but truthfully China has always interested me way more. So many great places to see. This would be an easy yes. Instant retirement.

Its not an inability to grasp that. Its just that you asked what the downsides are. I told you what they are. They may or may not apply to everybody equally (or at all), but theyre still areas that a number of people might be out off by.

The incarceration rate in the US is so much higher that the US has more prisoners than China despite being about 1/4 the population. The rest of your points stand, but Americans are very out of touch with how much more they imprison people than any other major country.

Probably the biggest thing tempting me to say 'Yes' here.

A lot of the downsides to living in China also apply to the US, or are fixing to also apply to the US. I mean, how much longer will we have before talking shit about Tyrant Trump gets you in hot water?
