When I was in high school, one of the seniors was 20 years old because he was a dumbass who kept getting held back.

By your definition, would he still be "a child" because he's enrolled in high school, and thus okay for this 20-year-old man to date and sleep with a 15-year-old freshman because they attend classes together?
i think this is an extreme example and a situation where everyone involved knows that person is not a "normal" student.

also the law this topic is about specifically applies to 18 year olds still in school, not older

It needs to become socially unviable to be a Republican

After they actively engaged in, openly supported, and then voted to uphold a violent coup attempt against democracy (and their own lives, which is the most baffling part to me), it shouldn't be socially unviable, it should be criminal and treated the same way as participation in any other terrorist organization.

I'm going to make one more post ITT because I feel like I'm taking crazy pills here. And I want to reiterate that when I made my first post about this I was mistakenly thinking this was applied to only kids of high school age. To be consistent with most states the younger student should probably be 14/15

yes, the general trend of the GOP towards defending pedophiles in its ranks is fucked up

ultimately, what this law does, is move the threshold for this crime being a misdemeanor to a felony back 8 months at most (from, whenever the student turns 18 which at the earliest would happen in September, to whenever the student graduates which is likely May of the following year)

there are close-in-age differences in statuatory rape laws across the country. We are talking about teenagers who go to school together. Yes 18 is the "age of majority" but don't we as a society generally measure maturity by school grade at this age anyway? Like, most of us can agree that a 30 year old dating an 18 year old is super creepy even if it's "legal" but isn't it way creepier if it's an 18 year old high school student vs. say, a college student? moving the cutoff to graduation feels honestly less arbitrary to me than "age 18" because then all the students at the high school are subject to the same rules. I don't expect teens to be out there comparing birthdates with their fellow students.

this doesn't strike me as "defending pedophilia" to me because IMO everyone in high school is a child, and I think it's fair for the law to treat them as such. I view this as: teenagers who are peers in classes together are going to form relationships whether we want them to or not, and I'm opposed to sending them to prison and marking them for life for that.

and frankly I really don't see what is so unreasonable or morally inconsistent about this stance that has people freaking out about it

(I love you @CE I hope you haven't branded me as a creep for life for this topic)
18 and 22 ( college senior) is a hell of a lot different than 18 and 13 cause you know both are adults. And still, teachers are charged with rape/sexual assault when it involves their students even in the same age bracket ( is 23/18 though most reported instances are usually in the 16/17 age range). Should we not charge them with felonies too? They have their whole life ahead of them?

The fact that you can't see that is yes very sus. That adult should definitely be charged with the felony. If he wins the case? Congrats. He doesn't? Welcome to the registry. Actions have consequences.

The "convenient"change of the law needs to be reviewed (at minimum) and in a sane country would have an ethics probe.

Also the victim in this case was a Jr. HS student. Not high school. Which also blows up your argument:

Utah Senate Pres. Stuart Adams spurred law change that helped teen charged with child rape https://share.google/PIV8Uw2LKZrQfTDIM

The mother of the junior high school victim said in an interview with The Tribune that she was shocked to learn about the change to the law. It was out of nowhere, she said. I felt like I was punched in the gut.

I know this now, I said at the beginning of the post you responded to and like three previous posts that I was mistaken about the age of incoming freshmen (bc I started high school when I was 13)

I do think an exception could be made for kids who have attended the same school for quite some time - it is really difficult to police kids who are in the same building and same classes from forming relationships with each other. But I really do think a politician should abstain from voting if they have a family member who is involved in this

While I dont approve of why hes doing it. Changing it from 17 to 18 while still in high school isnt a bad change. Kids are stupid, but it shouldnt ruin their lives.

as for the 13 and 18 year old comments I dont think age gap is bad, but maturity levels might be too much at that point.

I really really don't think seniors should be doing anything with 8th graders regardless of levels of "maturity".

I can't believe there's a world where a sexual relationship between an adult and a middle schooler is looked at as anything other than something requiring jail time.

This wasn't some " let's spend some extra time in my dad's truck after prom" type situation.

And the fact he got charged with two counts means it was a alleged pattern of behavior not a one time "mistake".

An adult should know better than that, and if they don't they need some years to think about it..

No wonder we have the president we do. No one is accountable for your actions

Which is weird, this seems cut and dry. Its abuse of power by a politician. Then you add in inappropriate relationship between two people not on the same page in maturity (middle school and high school).

The only thing I can agree with is the law itself giving a small bit of leeway with 18 and in HS, if it with 16-17 year old.

It is.

One of the memes I see reposted a lot in advocacy and awareness groups is that, "You're so mature for your age," is groomer speak to condition people way too young into doing things they are way too young for.

And that it's especially used by like college guys fishing in high school lakes.

Which just reinforces your point that the maturity gap between 18 and 13 is too big to make that example okay ever.

They don't see the politician part, certain GameFAQs types just see what could possibly be viewed as "borderline" pedophilia and rush to defend it.

EDIT: Or ephebophilia, they will cry, as I have seen so many times on this website.

Agreed. I do think that there is a place for certain of those "Romeo and Juliet" laws (i.e. 18-year-olds with 16-year-olds, or 17-year-olds with 20-year-olds, provided they went to school together), so to speak, but an 18-year-old and an 8th grader is way past that line. If there's no way for the two to have known each other in the same school building...that is some creepy shit.

You can't make something a crime retroactively, but like in this case, if the person was not charged you can protect them from being charged by changing the law.
