Never got into Bionicle

Spending your time making fan games is actually insane.

I will never understand why people waste their time making games like this with established IPs like they don't get shut down 90 percent of the time

This is why you never announce your project to the public before it's finished. For every Capcom out there, there's many more Nintendos.

Even then they're just gonna get a cease and desist and have to take it down and/or change it so it's still dumb

Never reveal a fan game until it's ready to release is the forgotten rule.

I distinctly remember a Bionicle fangame being announced years ago and actually having Lego's blessing. Is this not that same one?

Pretty sure it is. That's the fucked up part about this.

Bionicle fangame gets announced, LEGO themselves give them their blessing, enough so that a Steam page gets made for it. Several years of development pass, then LEGO changes their mind suddenly.

I understand legal calling the shots and not wanting to risk their IP or whatever, but when it comes to passion projects like this, I'll never understand why more effort isn't made by companies to make fan efforts official.

Employ these fans, give them resources or at least let them finish and publish an approved version even if the agreement is they get nothing at the end of it all and the company gets all revenue/profits.

I can see not wanting to encourage fan efforts as a back end runaround to the standard "we don't accept unsolicited submissions" rule most corporations have, but for a large/long project like this, feel like something approaching a show of good faith should be given

Looked it up, and it's actually a different one. The one I was thinking of was called Bionicle: Quest for Mata Nui, and there hasn't been any news for that game in nearly 4 years.

I don't even think Nintendo is that bad, all things considered. There are so many Nintendo fan games out there, big ones, that they just don't give a damn about. Don't make remakes, don't port games, don't try to make money. The only really good company is Sega, and only when it comes to Sonic games.

Same. Which is funny because when they first came out, I was like the target demographic for them. Had absolutely no interest in them. Always preferred sets with minifigures. Only ever bought one Bionicle and I feel like I did so because I was supposed to want it.

Always loved the Throwbots though.

The only really good company is Sega, and only when it comes to Sonic games.

hell now that sega views sonic as important again they are likely working to walk back there stance on sonic but have to be careful on how they do things

i suspect when project 06 finishes that will be when they make a move

I've never understood how this stuff works. Even back to practically the first example of the Chrono Trigger remake. Say I'm going to make a fangame right here on GameFAQs. How would any of you know how to stop me? It's not like you can find out my legal name or address.
