Everyone was hyped for it. Fun roster, fun gameplay. The stars were aligned.

Then they shut it down for like a year, fucking pulling the emergency brake on the hype momentum.

Then it came back, but was ported to Unreal 5 and played like shit

And they didn't carry over anything meaningful you unlocked from the beta

And they also doubled the price of all the characters to unlock them

I enjoyed the beta and played the game on and off as it went through god knows how many patches and reboots. The Fighters Road idea made no sense to me as you'd be forced to grind to get the most random progression of character unlocks with some of the crappiest ones requiring the most grinding. Matches ended up just not being fun as you'd always end up with new players who didn't know how anything worked or people who spent 24/7 mastering the game.

If it were up to me I would have kept the WB crossover concept but applied it to the NBA Jam formula and market it as a Space Jam game.

NASB2 was a lot of fun.

But yeah, I wanted to love Multiversus but it really shot itself in the foot. The roster was pretty great, and it definitely took a fresh approach by emphasizing doubles battles, but the physics always felt off even before they improved them and I disliked the perk system. And then it was all over when it came back and somehow felt worse to play on top of being mobile gameified with one of the worst single player modes Ive ever seen in a platform fighter. What an absolute disaster, and a complete shame to see what WB perverted it into.

Even though Nick Brawls were made on a shoestring budget and couldnt hold onto the hype post-launch, they at least feel the closest to Smash out of any clone Ive played. Plus you can be the Angry Beavers in the sequel playing like Pyra/Mythra in Smash, and thats just impossibly funny.

I wish it had been more successful. They had access to so many characters and IPs. DC characters alone couldve carried a game. But the opportunity was wasted and theyll probably never try again. ):

There are some out there. Rivals of Aether 1 and 2, Brawlhalla, etc are pretty popular, and Im personally interested into seeing what Fraymakers ends up being (its basically indie smash).

It's honestly an unfathomable series unforced error. How do you fuck up a collaboration game with some of the biggest media properties of all time? And it wasn't like NASB where it was made on a small budget. This thing had production values. I genuinely hope there are a lot of suits who ended unemployed after all of this because you just know corporate meddling killed this game.

It was a slam dunk right out of the gate. Game was fun and promising, had insanely high concurrent players, and won the Fighting Game of the Year at TGS.

It could have potentially been as big as Marvel Rivals, and they managed to do everything wrong possible overnight to drive everyone away.

similar situation with Xdefiant, they had multiple IPs to pull from for character ideas, but squandered it, had no interesting cosmetics but priced them at a premium anyway, and didn't listen to people's problems with the gameplay

then suddenly, what do you know, Ubisoft says they're losing players, and there hasn't been enough player spending

I suspect executive meddling is what most ruined the game post beta. Which was when the game was at its peak.

Slowing down the gameplay, making moves slower and more unsafe, adding more defensive options, gutting the perk system to make the game more mainstream.

On top of the awful battle pass progression and having to buy new characters.

The balancing was also a mess either way characters being drastically changed every few weeks. Forcing you to almost relearn the character. Which got old fast.

In hindsight, that inclusion of ultra instinct Shaggy was kinda cringe. Should never use these internet memes thatll be relevant one day and forgotten the next.

there's a lot of revisionist history surrounding this game for some reason. around the time they took the game down to rework it the game was already hemorrhaging players, that's why they did that in the first place. the revamped version is of course irredeemable from the gameplay to the monetization, but it was essentially just a hail mary to try and squeeze any money out of anyone and hope the slower gameplay would appeal to casuals more

platform fighters are already an incredibly niche genre outside of Smash, making a hectic, primarily 2v2 one was never going to work out.

I didn't think that the beta (which absolutely was not meant to be a beta at the time) was very good tbh. Didn't even bother checking it out when it came back because everyone said it was worse, haha.
