Not very often because of limited spending money, and usually other things take priority, but it does happen from time to time and I would like to be able to afford for it to happen more often.

Not often, but if there's a movie I know I'm going to want to rewatch it's nice to have a blu-ray because I can just watch it whenever without having to worry about whether I'm subscribed to the right streaming service. Plus it means I have stuff to watch if my internet is out.

Yeah. I think really physical and digital don't need to be the only format. A good compromise being that streaming would be for shows that aren't your favorite or most favorite while physical buys are the shows you want in particular.

I don't understand why you'd want to watch things online. You're paying monthly for a licence when you could be making one time purchases and you keep them forever.

Not everything is available for purchase. You can also get access to a lot more content per dollar.

Yup, you can get some good deals. Then you rip them, encode them so they are a reasonable size, rip out any audio and subtitles you don't want and then throw them onto your Plex or Jellyfin server

I have a large collection, but I just dont have any more room for additional purchases. Unlike with games, Ive resigned to the fact that most of the stuff Id like to watch will forever (in my lifetime, at least) be available on a streaming service, and I can watch it at my convenience. Hell, Ill pull up a streaming version before I get the physical DVD from my shelf. I do not buy digital version of movies, though.

Games are different. I largely buy physical for most of my gaming preferences.

Yes. I buy Blu-Rays and rip them to my NAS, then stream them across my network (or outside it for anyone I authorize) using Jellyfin / Emby / Plex.

The tricky thing is DVDs. Some things never got a Blu-Ray release. I always have subtitles on, and DVD subtitles look like dogshit. I have not found a good way to deal with this. I want to rely on the built-in subtitles rather than downloading an SRT, but I dont want them to look like shit.

Sometimes finding a decent srt is the only viable option, problem is there's a lot of shitty srts.

OpenSubtitles has them, and Emby / Jellyfin can auto download them for you (I have mine set to do that if there are no built-in ones), but in my experience you usually end up with them not being in sync and have to mess with the offset. Thats why Id rather avoid it.

I've never cared about muh DRM! but I just like physically collecting stuff. I like having a shelf, growing my collection, and organizing things where they should go. Waiting for a package from Hamilton books right now with 20 movies in it. There was fuck all for black Friday deals this year so I am kind of worried the hobby is just going to get more expensive in the future for new movies. But a DVD is fine for most stuff so I'm not worried about constantly upgrading my collection.

Most dvd and blu ray buyers use online retailers like gruv.com for those harder to find things.

Its where I bought my venture bros radiant is the blood of the baboon heart (finale venture bros movie, lol) blu ray on release, and for pretty cheap too.

If it's something I'm only ever going to watch once the "keep them forever" part of it isn't much of a selling point.

I used to have a huge collection of CDs, DVDs and comics. After moving a couple of times, I started to get rid of 99% of it.

Rarely watched half the stuff again and it was taking up way too much room.

If I get the urge for something specific and the streaming services I'm on don't have it. Well yoho me hearties, let's go sailing!

I did, until I had parents/grandparents pass away or get to the age where they start giving me their stuff. Then you realize that having a bunch of stuff is just burdening future generations with useless crap that you thought was "valuable". We are in the digital age, your stuff isn't as important as you think it is. Just get rid of it now and make your kids (or whoever has to sort through your crap when you die) life easier. Embrace the convenience of streaming.

Yeah, a 2nd hand store. And yes, got fractions of a penny for most.....it's really sad when you calculate the money you spend on these things. People who think they're going to be worth a lot one day are fooling themselves. I did get my enjoyment out of most, at least

Its a tricky one to navigate. I understand those who want to have their stuff on hand because it's a revolving door with the streaming services. And some people aren't savvy to acquire what they want by other means.

I hated having shelves full of them, gathering dust, never being watched. Now I'm mostly clutter free.
